Well, timgr say's it's illusive or even unobtanium, I don't know but here's some pictures of one fresh from the wild. The PO kindly preserved this on the rear spare tire mount. Is that a PN on the rear Tim? I can take more pictures or measurements if anyone want's.

Thanks for posting this. I am still searching for one of these so maybe the part numbers will be helpful. Could you tell me what the numbers are on the front of the lense?

    Elusive Side Marker Light

It's elusive not ellusive or illusive. Spel cheek broke.

I think ellusive is a hard to catch ell. Illusive is a hard to cure illness.

I'm usually pretty gud about spelling.

For those that are looking for this particular marker light one showed up on ebay today. I didn't copy the item number but the right key words should find it quickly.

Interesting that there was a color change on such a low production part. The EBay one is white and CANADA 1 and yours is black CANADA 2.

The one on my '72 is white as well...

I'd guess Jeep didn't care what the surround color was, as long as it was a neutral color. Black plastic is probably somewhat cheaper than white, because you can mix in recycled material and hide the original colors with black pigment.

Mfr to Jeep: "We can supply 5500 of 994035 at $0.3456 per unit to original spec, or at $0.3421 per unit by changing the base color to black."
Jeep to Mfr: "Change to black base and ship FOB Toledo."

I think that black plastic might have held up better to UV radiation. I've seen white plastic marker lights of that era turn chalky, crumble and fall apart from the effects of UV rays, but don't recall ever seeing a black one do the same thing.

Good point - seems likely. With black pigment, the light would thermalize more and not break polymer bonds.

Are there a lot of people looking for one of these lights? I ended up buying the eBay one, and I thought I could take it to a local plastic company in town and try to have duplicates made if there's any interest.

Are you serious, is that really you on ebay? I had no idea you were a member here also. Like I said, buying parts from you worked out great and I wouldn't hesitate to buy from you again!
