I can't seem to locate the neutral safety switch on my '80 CJ7 304, 4spd.
It starts in gear and appears that someone may have canned the safety switch some time back. Where should it be located?
Any advice or even maybe a few pics would be a great help!

Why do you think it has one? Most cars with manual transmissions (at least in that era) do not.

Just figured 1980 might have had one. The wiring under the dash is butchered & the crappy diagram I have shows wiring for a N.S. switch......But I do not find one. Just thought someone may have removed or bypassed it at some point.

Not sure when they started the clutch-in-to-start switch (not a neutral safety switch since it's a manual tranny), but I'm 99% sure your CJ7 never had one. Even the 98 TJ I used to own had a fuse that could be pulled to defeat the clutch in requirement, with instructions in the owner's manual on which one to pull, to allow it to start in gear. There are many times when you need to start your Jeep in gear when offroading, so not having one is not a bad thing.

Note that the wiring diagram will show a NSS that was only used on the automatic-equipped vehicles. On a manual trans vehicle it would be jumpered or missing.

Thanks for the help guys! That works for me so I'll just leave it as is.

Since this was run to ground...I'd like to ask if it's possible to install one...and if so, what parts would somebody try to get?

I ask because I think I'd actually like one installed so that my teenage sons don't make any "new driver" mistakes. But I could unplug a fuse when necessary.

I would put a "safety switch" on the clutch, so that, if the clutch was not pressed down, the starter would not engage. This would be MUCH easier than a Neutral switch and is how most, if not all, standard transmission cars are done nowadays (I own 6 and they are ALL that way).
