225 reverse chatter

    The '53 - '71 FSM recommends the use of "Anti-Clutch Chatter Kit part # 992824" Could this be the cable assembly discussed in several posts? If so, if I asked politely, would someone post a photo of theirs.

    I've got the same problem. did a search and found a lot of information on chatter. I think I'm gonna try new springs and shocks to see if it helps. Does yours chatter pretty hard or slightly.

    I've had reverse chatter for years and have tried everything to get it to go away, including rigging up a "anti-chatter" cable. Its still there. Let me know what you find.

    Part # 992824 "Anti-Chatter Clutch Kit" is meant to completely replace the lever and tube type clutch control system
    which is standard for early V-6 Dauntless Jeeps.
    The anti-chatter kit is identicle to the standard cable control system which is used on all late V-6 Dauntless Jeeps.

    The cable controlled clutch concept is a good one with few inherent concerns.
    I sometimes hear complaints about the long cable acting as an engine ground and welding itself internally.
    To lessen that possability one should obviously give attention to the engine ground strap.
    My belief is that powdered soapstone should be used to lubricate the internal cable from its outer sheath.
    Like graphite: soap stone is a naturally occurring extreme pressure lubricant.
    Unlike graphite: soapstone is an electrical insulator.

    I'm curios to know just what type of clutches are producing the unwanted reverse chatter.
    Are you guys with clutch chatter using diaphram type or the 3 finger type clutches ?
    Are these symptoms only occurring with Reverse ?

    Oldtime, thanks for your response. Chatter present in reverse only. IIRC diaphram type. Various positions of clutch engagement will alter the amount of chatter. Low rpms nearly eliminate. T/C & rear diff pinions are within 1*. Assume both upper & lower T/C to xmember bushings should contact reducing/eliminating torque rotation.

    My 71 had reverse chatter as well. Home-made lever/rod clutch linkage that was tight. My fix? Had the flywheel resurfaced. Smooth and no chatter in any gear.

    I have the chain clutch control. No chatter. bkd?

    AA chain kit, no chatter, but then it never did when I had the cable either.

    Huh. I always thought the cable running from the cross member to the lower left tranny bolt @ the bell housing was supposed to be the anti chatter device.

    Patrick,
    That's called an engine cable stay.
    It's function is to help hold engine, transmission and transfer case from pushing the fan into radiator during hard braking manuevers.
    The engine cable stay is a carry over from the very earliest Jeeps.

    No doubt that Dauntless engine insulators are a whole lot beafier than Hurricane engine insulators.

    :iagree: may or may not be your problem, and can cause this problem. had to redo a clutch job because the guy didnt do a fine cut on the flywheel (he got in a hurry) I made the machine shop resurface and specified who i wanted to resurface it (i knew this guy would do it right ;) ) no worries the second go around:D

    X3 in the 71. Might have just masked the problem, but once resurfaced I havn't had the problem since. I did however swap to a t-98 from the t-14.

    With all due respect, it would appear the engine stay cable has a different purpose than the anti-chatter device. Difficult to understand the smooth forward clutch release and the rear chatter. Surfaced PP 500 +/- miles ago. Power Lock gear additive added to diff lube from day one, however, this one sat for 15 years. Is it conceivable the P-Lock may be defective? Any other diagnosis suggestions would be appreciated.

    check your springs, shocks etc, by it only doing it in reverse could be a issue there as everything is torqued up in the opposite direction in reverse, may even be a weak spring on one side. I have had trucks do this as well (think tractor trailer) just had to get use to it with a company truck. worst was a freightliner, only did it in reverse and had to be up hill for it to do it

    Can't be sure of the cause, but the reverse chatter is gone. Lifted the left rear tire slightly off the concrete drive way with the floor jack heading forward and the right rear tire still maintaining contact. Released clutch in both directions at low rpms. Offered to move in both directions but then the left just spun with no obvious Powr-Loc engagement. Will do figure eights to see if PL returns without going in.

    You saying your Powr-Lok may be defective ?
    You might also consider the transmission and transfer case insulators or even the rear spring pivot bolts as items of interest.
