    More horsepower out of a 1966 cj5

Just bought a '66 CJ5 from some guy on ebay...haven't received the vehicle yet, I expect it to have some issues...one of the main concerns is speed and 75hp  anyway to increase that to something that will at least get me to 75mph on I-10?

yes, I am the dumb guy here, this is my first project Jeep.

  2. I'm afraid to go that fast in a old Jeep.

So you want to go 75mph in a stock 65 CJ????? Do you have a up to date last will and testament? Is it a v6 or a 4cyl and does it have a overdrive?

I'm not sure there's any way to get an F head powered CJ up to 75MPH...

    Seriously.

I thought I wanted to...but after reading the previous two posts, I'm scared now...4 cylinder, no overdrive.

A 66 is very close to the 64 I had. Even with an overdrive it's pretty tough to get 75 mph. I now have a 66 with the V6 and 75 isn't very hard to achieve.

I don't do it nearly as much as I used to, but that speed isn't uncommon.

    ...4 cylinder, no overdrive.

You may have to settle for 45 MPH.

As a "new to you" Jeep, you need to check all the mechanical systems before highway driving: Brake fluid, solid and flex lines, wheel cylinders and shoe linings-gotta be able to stop. Steering: Ross box, draglink ends, tierod ends and trunion bearing slop. Its a 40 year old machine and needs to be checked out. Good luck and the good people here can answer any possible question you may have.

    R) I dropped a Corvette 327 in mine. It'll do 75 in second now. ;)

if you wanted speed, a jeep was the wrong answer.

Yea, I kid about it but really if you’re looking for a daily driver that must commute via an interstate you should look elsewhere. Besides the obvious safety issues, going 75-80 down the road in a Jeep is like riding out a hurricane in a tent. You’ll step out of it practically deaf.

There's nicer ways to say this to someone who's new to old Jeeps you know. ;)

    Please use them here. :)

I certainly hope we weren’t being too discouraging.
Jeeps are awesome toys, I know I love mine, and I have known guys that used them as a daily driver but they didn’t have to travel the interstate to commute.

For the noise issues, when I used to drive my CJ for 4 hours at highway speeds just to get to the trailhead, I found that foam earplugs (the bullet-shaped kind that you stuff into your ear canal) work great, saves hearing and reduces the overall exhaustion that often comes with piloting a CJ at 60+ mph for 4 continuous hours :D
