my fuel gauge has never worked correctly, when i fill the tank the gauge moves to E and moves toward F as the tank is emptied. The po said he reversed the leads on the gauge but it made no difference. after reading old posts here, I understand its probably because the stock sending units has different ohms than the aftermarket gauge. So how to fix the problem? does anyone know the ohms rating on a stock 1972 sending unit?

Also (to keep me from running out acccidentally) whats the fuel capacity of a stock 1972 tank?

    73 ohms @ empty
    23 ohms @ 1/2 full
    10 ohms @ full

Wow, thanks alot. now all i got to do is find a new gauge with that rating and i'm in business. Then cross my fingers and knock on wood that the sending is the orginal.

Is there a way to test my sending unit before I buy a gauge? My tank is full now.

Something else you can do is do as Howard sez. Twist the swing arm on your sender to the opposite direction 180* and it will reverse the swing on your gauge. This changes the direction of the internal swing on the wiper inside the sender.

What!! You guys don't believe me? You dont rotate the whole sender. You hold the the sender shaft and twist the shaft so that the float is pointing in the opposite direction. Or you can bend the shaft at its 45* bend in the opposite direction for the same effect. Believe me.. It will work.

Crown supposedly makes better guages than Omix. Unfortunately I installed one for a friend, it died quickly, and have not been able to replace it. I recommend rebuilding the originals.

PS - how can you "reverse the leads". If you put 12v to the sender side shouldnt it just read full until it cooks the guage? Does the temp guage operate correctly? Alternatively if you put 12v to the jumper strap, that will cook the temp guage very quickly.

The article posted is an excellent reference.

I bought a Crown OEM replacement for 75. It worked so-so and it burn out after a couple of wheeling trips. But I have bad luck with anything automotive that I do. :(
