i opened some things up today.
in the rear i found some bits of metal and got scared.
    then i saw the cover.
someone hit a rock and caved it in a bit and the gears pushed it back out.
big difference in the color of the fluid between the front and rears.

i wiped out the front with all that nasty stuff as well as possible.
    and filled both up.
a long time ago it looks like somebody liked to drive through water .
but not take care of it afterwards.
it got too late to rent a puller so i could take the brake hubs off.

That 44 cover is a pretty common crush zone. I did mine on a rock as well. I had a local shop fab me a double walled cover for strength. Basically its 2 covers. Cut the mounting flang off of one and weld it over the other one. It has taken a couple of good hits without any issues.

Front was definatley milk shake and should have been changed long ago. Hopefully it did not mess up the bearings.

Other then the scratches the rear looks good. Does not look like the cover contact heated up the gears to a dangerous level.

The carrier has to be pulled to replace the seals anyhow, if they need replacing the bearings are only a few more hours work if you can lay your hands on/beg/borrow/steal a dial indicator to set up the pinion/ring meshing.

looks like someone made a homemade angle iron base and rollbar set up at one time that was torched off? Not stock.
