I'll feed you and provide free beer if you could stop by and help....look at my last thread, (changed head gasket/adjusted valves........) for info on the situation......I HAVE TO BE ABLE TO DRIVE TO WORK TOMORROW OR I WILL HAVE NO MORE JOB TO DRIVE TO!

What happened to just adjusting them as Dummy described?

I adjusted them as he, (and my old boss at an automotive shop, and crane cams website), told me to. a few had a bit too much gap, and one was way off....now.....It chatters pretty loudly, but I got brave and drove it around the block.....it has never been more powerful, no misses, no hesitation, and good push up to 3000 rpm......

How much noise is too much??????
It runs so well besides the noise, which stays pretty constant in volume, just changes speed with the engine.....

I hope you can get some local help.

Words are starting to get important. You have a "chatter". Is that different than a tappet rattle/tap, rod knock, exhaust leak tapping ... etc ? Or maybe an ignition/lean "ping".
How was the temperature, oil pressure? Do you have a vacuum gauge?

the sound would be comparable to the normal sound of rocker arms running when you have the valve cover off.....only louder......
I drove it again....doesn't seem to be overheating, (no temp gauge)....and it has ALOT more power than it ever has, (at least as long as I have had it)
It does not get louder as the engine revs....just stays the same only faster.......
I have to be able to get to work tomorrow.....
suggestions at this point? Drive it or not?
(could I just be hearing the smooth shiny edges of the valves since I lapped them? doubt it, but thought I would ask)

I'm out of ideas (other than rechecking your lash).
    Best of luck to you.

Your sure your getting oil up through to the rockers?

the tips of the rods and valves are getting soaked really well....lots of oil droplets went everywhere when I ran it without the valve cover......so I would assume that I am getting oil to everything.....

Just a guess here, but I think you said you replaced the pushrods. Are the new ones the same length as the ones they replaced?

held up to each other they do appear to be the same length....
they aren't rubbing anywhere or anything either, and the excessive play isn't so much anymore......still loud though....

I simply do not like that combination of words, after the lash was adjusted correctly. (assuming an F head)

I hope you got to work and back OK today!
As Homebrew pointed out, if you adjusted the valves properly, you do not have excessive play. Now what comes to my mind is a stuck valve or a stretching valve maybe even a flat lobe on the camshaft. Are they all opening about the same amount? Do any of them hang down alot more then the others? Say 1/2 inch or more?
Have you done a compression test? I do not recall if you did or not. If so was it after you adjusted the valves? If not, try one now.
Use a stethoscope, or a wooden dowel to find exactly where the noise is coming from. The generator, waterpump. exhaust manifold, and anything else that rotates or has high pressure air going through it should be tested this way. You should be able to find the cause of the noise this way. Keep us posted, Matt W.

Ok....I made it to work and back, (over 20 miles each way). It is still loud, and I noticed that there are two sounds....the rocker arm sound, and another more metallic tapping sound that I cant quite pinpoint the location of....It didn't seem to overheat, but did trickle a small amount of coolant out of the overflow every time I turned it off....still is more responsive and has more power than it used to, but I know I'm pushing my luck, and a rod through the block or the crank being welded in place doesn't sound like my idea of a good time....My old boss at the shop I used to work at is of course not in tomorrow, or all weekend.....I need to do something here, I just don't know what.....(on the bright side, the head gasket is holding up nicely.)

Calm down a little. It's running better than before, you're on the right track. :)

A rod knocks, not ticks. A deep hollow knocking sound. Did you have this sound before replacing the head gasket? If not the timing seems suspicious to me for a rod knock to suddenly develop.

Before the head gasket change I had a VERY faint tapping....too quiet to pinpoint where it was coming from.....If I can get to a timing light again I will check the timing, but I set it at 5* BTDC a few weeks ago....
