I have a 58 CJ6 that came with this winch and I really don't want it and I don't know much about it. I do know when I engage it, the winch is attached to the front pully of the engine. I would like to sell it, so what is something like this worth?

    Thanks,

    Matt

    OEM CJ6 part question

I just posted a question about a winch on my CJ6 that came with the Jeep from the dealer and it was bumped to another section of the forum that didn't apply. I am not sure why it was bumped because it does pertain to the early CJ6 post. If anyone could answer this for me, I would apppreciate it.

    Here was my question.

I have a winch that came with me 1958 CJ6 that is like a boatsman winch, I guess that is what you would call it. Anyways I don't know much about it and I was wondering if anyone could tell me more about it and what it might be worth. I do know it connects to the pully on the front on the engine to drive it, but I haven't seen any other jeep with this style of winch before. It is a Willys winch, which I read from the description plate on the winch. So if you have any info on this I would greatly appreciate it.

    Thanks,

    Matt

If you have a post that's moved, don't go and repost again in the forum from where the original was moved. That's just bad form and will only irritate the moderators and you'll not likely get a nice response as to why it was moved to begin with.

Capstan winch is the right name IIRC. THis site http://www.capstanwinch.com/ might give you an idea of what it's worth.

eBay it with a high reserve.

    Sparky,

Sorry, I am not trying to upset anyone.

I am trying to understand why it was moved in the first place. I thought the section I was posting in was to discuss all about the early CJ5/6 jeeps and associated willys equpment. I do understand if I was talking about a MileMarker winch I shouldn't post it in the early CJ5/6 section, but I was talking about a Willy's winch that came from the dealer or possible the factoy with it. The only reason I reposted the question is I thought I didn't explain myself very well on what I was asking so I reposted trying to be clearer on the subject.

I hope I didn't offend anyone, but I am trying to understand where I should be posting this question and why.

    Thanks,

    Matt

    Thanks timgr!

How popular are the Capstan winches? Are there a lot of jeeps out there with these? I personally haven't seen one before, but that isn't saying much.

    Thanks

    Matt

From the price of the complete kits Tim posted, it looks like they are going to be mainly for the complete resto crowd. I can't see it being anywhere near as efficient, or as safe as a modern electric or hydraulic winch.
But for someone looking to restore a Jeep that still wants a winch, this would be what they are going to be looking for.

Matt, I don't know anything more about them than the name.

Somebody here might know more - try starting another thread with a name like "Capstan winch info?" or some such.

The moderators are supposed to decide about what is and where to put an errant thread. "Off Topic" means not CJ-5 stuff... seems clear enough to me, but no great crime if your judgment doesn't match the moderator's. However, they are in charge, so the forum they pick for the thread has to be respected.

    hth!

You are right, the moderators need to be respected. I should have PM'd them the question on where why it was moved rather than reposting the question. Sorry.

The capstan winch works differently. Instead of the cable, Halyard,
line, etc being secured to a drum as it is on a Ramsey, the line is given a couple 3 or 4 loops around the head of the capstan. The capstan is moving and as the line is drawn tight from the side away from the load the binding friction draws the loaded line toward the capstan. When you are happy with the amount of movement of the load all you do is release the tension from the unloaded side of the line.
There isn't any unspooling involved. Just drive up, set the parking brake, jump out with a coil of rope, tie one end to the wife unwilling to go four-wheeling and who has a death grip on a fence post, stretch the line to the jeep-a couple of loops around the capstan and BINGO you are in court.

Could you get a picture of how the winch is driven off of the crankshaft. I am trying to remanufacture the drive portion to complete a winch I am working on.
    Thanks

I can do that, but I found a website searching Capstan winch and it showed how everything went together. What you need is a front engine drive pulley with 6 holes in it and a winch drive bracket assembly that will mount around the pulley and supports the hookup to the pulley. I will see if I can find the website again.

Typically used to pull something towards the jeep like a log. Not to pull the jeep out of a stuck.

sounds like it would be handy for haulling deer and elk off side of mountains where it would be easier to butcher
