The guy I got my M38 from said he had spent some money getting it running, lubed, brakes, etc. I've only driven it a few miles (to go get ) after I got the skinny Swampers on it, but this made me nauseas:

And that is actually about all that drained out of it :(

    That's a good idea, thanks.

I filled it and the trans up with fresh Valvoline. I changed the engine oil, it was thin and black but at least full, and no signs of anti-freeze in it (and the radiator doesn't show signs of oil in it...). I headed back to the rear diff, but after a scare from not being able to get the transmission fill plug out after I had pulled the drain plug, I was stopped by the rear diff fill. It is rusted up pretty well. Hopefully just exterior.

All of the square holes in the drain and fill plugs are only broached about 3/8", even though the round holes go at least another 1/4"?

The first thing i do to my jeeps when i get them home is drain all oils front, rear,tc,motor,it still amasses me how much water can come out of these.Fill yours back up and run it i'm sure you will be ok.

Mine was in about the same condition when I brought it home, Put clean lube in it and so far so good.

    :iagree:
Kinda sickening to see something like that, but at least it doesn't appear to have that metallic brown look to it that usually lets you know you have bigger problems. As long as everything works, just fill it back up and then check it every so often to see if it's leaking.

Well, I know have a good idea what the Exxon-Valdez cleanup effort was like. I woke up this morning to an 8 foot lube slick down my driveway.

In a moment of brilliance, I did think to turn it around facing down the driveway. That and a drip pan seem to be the temporary fix.

So, is it possible to replace the rear output seal without tearing down the 18?

    sammy Coca-Cola?

Yes, but it's hard. I recommend you add some RTV to the splines(make sure they're dry before hand) And torque it down propper. If that doesn't work...
Remove the rear yoke, park break, and bearing cap. Keep the shims in order, and set them aside. Remove the seal from the bearing cap, clean the surface and drive a new seal in. Put copper gasket on the shims, install again reverse of what came off. Here's Rick Stivers guide, locate the section and fallow the instructions on it if needed. http://www.cj-3a.com/Model%2018%20Rebuild.htm

Well ...you now know why it didnt have much lube in it when you checked. I would follow the advice given by Sammy , If it were me I would also pull the bottom pan off and firmly grasp the intermediate gear and push/pull and twist and see if there seems to be any excessive backlash.I have always known the intermediate shaft to be the the part that wears out of tolerance the quickest in the D-18.You could also look for any metal particals that settle and stick to the bottom of the pan, this might give an idea of the overall amount of wear the components were subjected to during the low lube operation. You'll get your best view into the unit with the pan off.

Yeah, I towed my first 2A home with everything in neutral but I should have checked th oil first or disconnected the drive shaft. By the time I got home and took it apart, the intermediate shaft was pertineer sawn in two. The funny part of it all was I heard the noise as I was going down I-70 here in Denver and so I kept slowing down more and more cause I knew something was amiss. Just so happened that then Pres. Clinton was in his motorcade coming into town from DIA on I-70 and we had them held up. They, cops and all, wouldn't pass us.

It'll prolly make some noise from worn needle bearings, just take it for short jawnts and feel the case from excessive heat. Until your sure it won't need a rebuild. Check the diffy fliuds also. Buy some kitty litter for future spills. WElcome to the world of willys!!
