Identify and advise?

    I found this jeep coming up at a nearby auction, the description is nothing more than Willys Jeep, 4cyl. army style. I have never owned this style jeep, only the 70's CJ5's and thought I might pick this up at a good price as it isn't a big part of the auction. All I have is this picture to go off and I'm hoping you guys may be able to narrow down year, etc. Hopefully I can also get an idea of a good price and things to look at before buying this style.

    Mmm. Civilian model, looks like a CJ-3A to me. Maybe a 2A with 3A windshield. CJ-3A was 1948-53, pretty desirable. Any flatty in good condition is desirable.

    mid 47 or earlier CJ2A
    appears to have the bullet lights in the grille
    w/shield frame is 2A, (square corners) but the division strip in the center has been removed and 1 piece glass installed
    do you know if it runs ?
    could be a $500 Jeep or a $1500 Jeep based on that question alone

    The listing doesn't state if it runs. I will have about 1 hour of viewing prior to sale to test it out. The gentleman who owned it stored it in a heated pole shed compared to his 79 J10 that was left outside, so he may have still been working on the Willys prior to passing away.

    Looks like an ECj2A with a one piece glass in the 2a's windshield frame, it seems to be tube, not the flat bar.

    body looks to be in great shape from that photo. getting a flatty to run is easy. buy it.

    I vote..... 3A with a 2A windshield frame.

    it is a 3a with 2a windshield. The parking lights are 3a and no top boy storage brackets on the side, front frame looks 3a

    That's odd, normally you see a 2A with a 3A windshield. Correct?

    I really need to slow down when I type and pay attention to the spelling. O well. Yes usally it is a 3a windshield fram on a 2a.

    These are often removed...

    Honestly the only way to tell would be pics of the wheel housings and seat frames IMO.

    Either way you look at it as it sits right now it would be a frankenjeep. (not bad with a flatty though, most are)

    Being a 3a w/ 2a windshield, is that going to be a problem finding a top and doors? May be a stupid question, i've never looked into something of this age. I have access to to tops from neighbors, one from a 53 and one from a 46.

    I'd certainly bid on it. From the photos I'd probably bid $1000, but only out of caution. With closer inspection, I'd go higher if the pictures are representative. At $1000, if it's full of bondo/rust you could flip it or part it out ...

    How much do you want it?

    Thanks much for all the help, in my neck of the woods it's hard to find one without the body rusted out. I hope to get it for under $1000. If i am top bidder i'll post pics right away.

    Looks like it has bumper gussets meaning a CJ2A, park lamps are 47-49. No side bow pockets so either the body is modified or it's a 47 because they made 12,000 jeeps in 47 w/ the bow pockets on the opposite side. If no bow pockets on the other side then check that body carefully for lots of bondo.

    I agree with Kodiak! I'm a CJ3A guy and I immediately zeroed in on the front frame horns. Whatever it is, it's sitting on a CJ2A frame! There has been a lot of bodywork on the sides... maybe the top bow pockets were removed. I don't see the ports to let the water out behind the side steps, so my guess is it got a new skin at some point in time!

    Below is a shot of a '46 CJ2A that sold at an auction in MD 2 weeks ago for $400. It ran, but was a basket case otherwise!

    If it runs and you can get it for less than 1,000 bucks, go for it! (Remember, it probably has the floor starter. When I bought mine at auction, no one could get it started. Fortunately, they didn't know it had a foot starter! I got mine for $530 a couple years ago... probably would have gone for more if they knew how to start it!:twisted:)

    All of the bolt-on parts (and the bow pockets) can be replaced. I'd be far more concerned about the condition of the frame (does it have lots of old repairs) the title status and just how complete the vehicle is overall.
