hey guys i have seen several 5's with the door openings enlarged like a 7. how do you go about doing this? any special tricks?

i see that you can buy tub sides fairly reasonable. but is their a better way??

I saw that modification in the last issue of JP magazine. I was wondering about the same thing. Probably have to get a pattern from a CJ7 and fabricate it. Let me know if you find any info, I'll do the same.

Just curious, what would be the point of this mod? Seems to me, even if you did the Boylink notch, all you wind up doing with a bigger door opening is showing more seat. Or am I missing something here? Seems like the limiting factor on a 5 is the rear wheelhousing. Boylink would give you 2" max...hardly seems worth the effort. 7's are just plain bigger vehicles with a longer WB.

Yes. I can't see any advantage to changing the door opening, and there are some obvious disadvantages.

As far as getting a comfortable seating position, you might be surprised at what a difference 2" makes.

I didn't even notch that much, and the Jeep went from completely undriveable to having almost more room than I needed.

    YMMV...

But on the door part I agree - while showing more seat might make it easier to get in onto the seat I don't think it'd be worth the effort, and it screws up the lines of the CJ5 - just looks goofy.

Only reason I can see is if you want the later top with the bigger doors.R):hurrican:

    :iagree:

That's the exact word I was going to use, but didn't want to be my usual curmudgeon/naysayer self. With the short wheelbase, there's not enough metal between the wheel opening and the door for that shape to work.

:iagree: I think the reason you see the door openings reshaped is because the CJ7 tops and 1/2 doors are more available.
IMHO, if you want the CJ7 top and doors, buy a CJ7.

The real issue is the school bus steering wheel in the CJ5. If you go with a smaller wheel you can get in and out better. And if you want to go further, I modified mine by breaking the welds that hold the steering column tube to the dask mount bracket. I pushed the tube in more to the windshield, and i cut the dash a bit more than the original location and pushed it up higher. So now i have ALOT more room to get in and out. My buddy who has a 72 was amazed about how easy it was to get in and out.

I have to add with my long experiance with the door hump in a CJ5 the first time I sat in a CJ7 I fell out. Realy embarrasing. You don't realize how attached you become to that hump.

The PO on my CJ5 lowered the firewall attachment about 1" and even at 5'15" I have plenty of room.
