Carb problems?

    I knew things were going too well. Today the Jeep:v6: just stopped while I was going down the road. No sputter, putt-putt or anything. Except the smell of gas. When I opened the hood I noticed gas everywhere on the intake. I took off the air cleaner and tried to start it again. When I crank it, smoke comes out of the carb. There is gas coming out from around the carb; I'm not sure from where, since I haven't been able to look at it while trying to start it. It was running fine up until this point. I would post pictures if I could, but I'm not close right now. I'll get it home a little later. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I'm new and I hope this is something simple that I just missed. (I do know that it has gas in the tank.)

    Sounds like a stuck float to me. Tap the float bowl with a screwdriver handle a few times - might be just enough to unstick it - it worked for me -
    Sounds like it is time for a carb rebuild......

    Now that I think about it, the choke was stuck open. I'll give it a try and see what happens. Thanks.

    Choke should be fully open. That is normal operating mode for it. Closed for cold starts, open for all other operation.:coffee:

    Ok...Uh, never mind then.:rofl: I'll still give it a tap and see how that works. Thanks for the info.

    Tap the passenger side where the fuel line runs in.

    It worked! Thank you. I got it running and back home. :driving: Now I'm a little nervous about driving it. So, about that carb rebuild...would it be better to rebuild or go for a new setup...possibly a 4 barrel?
    One random question-is it natural for the entire Jeep to shake when it's idling? I thought the motor was going to fly apart, it was moving around so much. Anyways, thanks for the help.:beer:

    sounds like you have a bad miss,normally some vibration is normal but all in all if it is "right" it runs like a singer sewing machine:rofl: carb rebuild good idea,i am also checking out new carbs though:rofl: wish i just had a good one to rebuild:)

    I personally would stick with the 2G, other folks do swap to a 4bbl though with good success.

    You'd do well to check the timing, fuel mixture, etc. Mine runs, well I hesitate to say smooth (it is an Odd-fire) but smooth I guess.

    Engine mounts could be worn out too.

    sorry just caught that its a v6,these do have somewhat of a rough idle,and is normal,has something to do with the degree of the cylinder,think it was explained to me as being a little to steep of an angle for a v style engine that causes it,not much you can do for that,nature of the engine,although sounds like it could stand a good tuneup

    It's not the angle as much the journals on the crank and degrees between firing. The later even-fire engines with a split crank run "smoother".

    Like I said though, mine runs pretty smooth...
