How Does Pertronix Work?

    interested in the pertonix my self,how does this work? do you send them your dist and they convert it or is it a whole new assy?

    Magnetic trigger.

    Drops in, replaces points and condenser.

    DIY in the Jeep. :) Instructions are downloadable off their website for more detailed information.

    thanx for the input sparky,think i will just stick with the points then,as i have no problem understanding or replacing them,and just about like everything else i own has the points as wellR) lets see out of 8 vehicles 3 have electronic and one is diesel,thanx again

    Don't be afraid of the Pertronix kit, it is a VERY easy swap and the results are well worth it. Starts faster, idles smoother, all around a very nice upgrade. ;)

    Seriously, its worth the time and money. Points just can’t deliver the kind of spark an electronic ignition like a Petronix can. Plus you don’t have the problem of points bounce / float or voltage loss at higher RPMs. They’re just an all ‘round better way to ignite the fuel / air mixture.

    Absolutely the best, most impressive modification I did. (aside from the disc brake conversion)
    I confirmed this when I was trying to figure out the hesitation/stalling issue -I swapped back to points and definately was not impressed with the change.

    Extremely easy conversion -
    Highly Recommended!!

    Times 4 or 5. Great upgrade, looks factory, and a stupid-simple install. I'll never mess with points again! Cheap, too. It's kinda like going from vacuum tubes to transistors...it's just a good idea!

    After reading this thread I decided to get Pertronix myself, but when I went to their website I'm not sure what to buy. What do I buy for my F-134 to convert it?:?

    I cut and pasted this from a post I made in the Flat fender section, but this seems to be a smokin' deal.

    Hi, I'm a newb here, but not to Jeeps. I pulled the hacked 24v distributor from my M38A1 and swapped in a regular L-134 dist in. But yesterday, I found this:

    A complete, new, solid-state distributor for F and L-134! Mine is ordered and on the way. Here is the link, and no I don't work for them! $125 and $18 shipping - a 5% online coupon at top of the first page.

    I ditched my 24 volt distributor that was jury rigged and swapped in an L distributor from my MB parts box. But it is gone the way side pretty quickly! I received this in the mail this week and will try to post some pics this weekend.

    I'm just being a smartazz...please let us know how it works out!!! Even though it's from Omix-Ada, I'm very interested. It's not much more money than a Pertronix conversion, and if my distributor is worn out this might be a good option.

    I'm shooting for reasonably original, but I'm open to mods like this. My JEEP will LOOK like a stock '56, but with 11" brakes, dual chamber m/c, 12v electrics, electronic ignition, V6 Ross steering box, etc. All the good safety and performance upgrades. Maybe an OD too, if I can find one.

    I will. I was having difficulty getting my M38A1 to run. Finally ditched the converted 24v distributor and went with the MB leftover and it cooked the points. Previous owner hadn't bothered with a ballast. Fixed that and it still wasn't right. I finally found plugged vents in the fuel tank, and it runs well now so I want to do some other things first. My next project is the Dana 44 rebuild. Somebody has driven the broken rear until the pinion is completely toothless and polished! Should have that rebuilt tomorrow and the new axle bearings will be in this week. Your jeep sounds like what I am interested in. Looks mostly stock but better!

    I forget the name for my distributor on my 225, it's not the one they put in 1970, it's the earlier one, with the hole in the side to set the dwell on the points.

    I've gone thru 3 sets of points and 2 condensers in the short time I had to run this jeep before the driveline detonated, and would love to drop in a pertronix kit.

    I've used pertronix in hte past on VWs, so I know how it works and how to install it...

    Just wondering if someone had a part number that I could use for this dist... I can send a pic if necessary.

    guys i dont doubt the electronic ignition isnt the way to go,however i have not found what i am lookin for yet,a friend of mine several years ago came to me and asked if I would install a new dist in his 1970 ford pickup,and i said i would , when i got there i was in total supprise,had no idea he was going that far on his ford,and was completly suprised he even ask me when I saw his truck. But even more surprised when he showed me the distributor, it was a GM HEI and bolted right up. I am trying to get a hold of him this evening to get the manufacturer he went thru. It's all about parts availability to me and I am a GM man first and foremost but love Jeeps too! The reason I even asked the ? is I am distributorless!!!! i have a borrowed one!!!! And he wuld like to have it back! :rofl:

    I just posted Pertronix PNs the other day for the 225 V6 from their catalog.

    They only make them for the Delco distributor not the Autolite.

    I'd be convinced to switch distributors if I had electronic replacement for the points/condenser. I really dig mine though, it's super easy to pull the points for filing and a snap to set the dwell... but that's irrelevant in a points-free world. :)

    Wish I could just drop in the barely used mallory electronic dist from my 351W :)

    Thanks for the MB compliment. It's slightly modified, but I want one I can really do some things to which is why I got my M38A1.

    Don't the aftermarket companies make drop-in distributors like the unilite? I have a Mallory dual point in my Z car with a Unilite conversion. (It was $200 cheaper than buying it installed from Mallory...)

    Davis Unified Ignition makes GM HEI's that fit other vehicles, but for the Buick guys, you should be able to get one from a 75-79 GM rear drive car. If memory serves (and it's not as good as it was...) the odd fire uses a V8 distributor with the appropriate reluctor triggers just lopped off. If that is the case, any Buick V8 electronic distributor could be used with a little file work.

    At this point in this thread, I don't know what motor we are talking about anymore! What specific engine are we trying to score electronics for?
