steep hill climb with a carter yf

    Hey everyone,

    I've been wondering about how steep of a hill climb I can make with my '57 CJ5. It's got a stock F134 and Carter YF. I was thinking as long as I keep my foot on the gas I shouldn't have a problem and will likely roll the jeep before it stalls out.

    So long as you have enough momentum to get to the top after the float valve slams shut, assuming that's the limitation on the carter yf.

    Otherwise it's stallsville and rolly-back-downy-hilly... :D

    Maybe you can back up the hill in reverse, like Model 'T's have to do...

    my WO never stalls out for some reason i guess its a better design? The oil squirts out the breather alot though :)

    Hey, at least Evan isn't asking about how many limo's he can jump with his Jeep! YIKES! I still get the shakes when I think of that thread.

    I have never had a problem with mine but I use common sense because of the no roll bar problem. never had a stall. I could stop on a hill and then restart again. but like I said I use common sense in which hills should be tryed and those that should not.

    Can't say for a YF but my Solex loves steep hills it doesn't like steep dropoffs, To borrow a phrase- "it's just a point and click" when it comes to hill climbs. Only thing holding me back is the sheer volume of excess HP available with the Fhead, Oh yeah get your emergency brake working properly before you test out your YF, it will save a nasty forum thread later.

    good call.

    Yeah i've got a few good climbs around where I live. I've done them in my TJ and have always been tempted to do them in the CJ5, but didn't want to get halfway up, stall, and start rolling back down since these hills are pretty steep it would probably end up pretty badly.

    They are supposed to run out of gas?
    When I was running around the Nevada Desert back in the early '70's I'ld take a book and my '48 '2a and chose a sandy bank,run the front up it in 4x4, gun the motor, burying all four tires and shut off the engine. Perfect lounge chair position! I'ld read for a hour or two, Start her back up, back down the bank and go home. Never accured to me I should not be able to do that cause the carb would run out of gas.
    Of coarse I was young and dumb, what can I say?

    a single-float carb has one float that moves on one axis. As you rotate the carb's axis (with the vehicle going up or down or off-camber) the level of fuel in the carb may or may not cause the float to close its valve before the jets are starved for fuel.

    Once you've got air on your jets, you have a dead engine.

    Some of the "big" engine carbs, designed for off-road use, have dual floats which operate on different axes than each other, this way when you get out of shape, there can still be enough fuel in the bowl to feed the jets while still preventing the carb from flooding.
