Starter Conversion

    I was wondering what anyone has used to convert the foot operated started on a 134 to a conventional solenoid activated starter. From what I've read, it would require swapping out the flywheel and bellhousing to accomodate the different starter. Any easier way, or even a solution that used more common parts? Thanks.

    12 volt battery and a dash button :D

    im not sure I fully understand your thoughts to switch and I dont think it exists actually.

    Yeah Tim I had the same request some time ago. I just had to pay $50 for an obsolete NOS starter drive for my CJ3A.

    would it actually be possible to buy a push botton starter that you could mount to the dashboard?

    Do you have an L-head or F-head? The L-heads on early 2As/trucks/waggies used a different tooth count ring & starter gear but the later ones & all the F heads use the same tooth counts as the bendix gear starters. If you do have a F or later L head all you'll need is a bendix style starter , a solinoid & a push button. In point of fact the 55-56 5's (& I'm assuming 3Bs of the same vintage) used a floor mounted switch with a bendix starter instead of a key switch & solinoid.

    I was thinking a high voltge push button switch would do the same job as the floor mounted button. Just run the wires to the button the same way they are on the floor. Then you could mount the button on the dash instead of the floor or both. Not sure if the button on the floor has a solenoid built into it or not though.

    Its mechanical G. There are no wires going to the floor button. Lever action makes contact on the starter and pushes the drive gear onto the flywheel ring gear.

    I have an L head. I was thinking that I may be able to swap in a non-mechanical starter drive and mount a solenoid on the fender or firewall. Or, while the whole thing is in pieces, it might be easier to find a later flywheel and bellhousing.

    And what is wrong with the foot starter?
    I kinda dug mine, when i had it ('51 pickup)
    One thing about it, no one younger than 35 will be able to steal it, cause they won't be able to find the starter button!:coffee:
