Well it looks like I will finally be replacing my leaky head gasket.
Question: What gasket sealer should I use. I have never done a head gasket repair.

    Thanks :coffee:

Meaning most(if not all) head gaskets come with the sealer on them

Yeah, what blevisay said - they most definitely go on dry. I use Napa (made by Permatex) thread sealant w/ Teflon PN 765-1188 on the head bolts that enter water or oil passages. Follow the torque sequence and you'll be fine.

I messed up and used the rubber end gaskets for the intake instead of RTV, so I had a slight oil leak at the rear of the manifold. May be you can benefit from my stupidity. I also used Edelbrock Gaskacinch on cork valve cover gaskets w/ good results. I ran headers and just used the steel Napa factory replacement ones.

It's actually a fairly easy job. You'll really appreciate the weight of the smaller V6 heads and intake if you're used to working on V8s.

    Good luck.

If the rubber end gaskets are put on with Permatex and allowed to sit for about 20 minutes before using they will usually seal fine. I have about 2000 miles on my motor now with no leaks. YMMV

:iagree: Modern head gaskets don't need a sealant.

Spray-on copper sealer is used with copper or aluminum shim gaskets, but those are rarely used these days except for specialty applications. Just though I'd throw that out there..

In either cae, don't forget to go back a re-torque all the head bolts after a time, even on so-called no-retorque gaskets. AMHIK.

permatex spray on think it is called high tac or something like that, i use the red but copper would be just as good , most of the gaskets today recomend putting it together dry, i put the last one together dry and was not pleased,i had some seepage and it took a while to seal but eventually did, spray on is also good to seal the threds on the head bolts that enter the water jacket. tourque it in three even steps,if it tourques @ 60 lbs do all of them 20 then go back and do all to 40 then go back and finish @60,re torque to spec after engine has been run a bit, even on the gaskets that claim no retorque required, and i may have the spec, her is the spec for a 1967 225 head is 65 -80 ft lb also have the sequence but no way to post it

Getting ready to do my head gasket. Question: Do you put any permatex under and the top of the rubber ends or just in the corners where the end of the gasket meets the cylindewr heads?

If you're talking the little rubber channel gaskets that go across the end of the intake, I use permatex in the corners(or ends) as well as in the channel on the bottom.

Thanks Mike....that was exactly what I needed to know.

PS - Should I use any on top of the gasket?

You can but I think theres a little bead on top that acts like an o-ring to seal the bottom of the intake.

I used a small dab (1/4") of weatherstrip cement in the corners to help hold the gasket in place during assembly.

Hey guys...I am getting ready to put the intake on......the intake gasket (SIDES) is metal....do I need any sealant on that?
