Ok, call me sheltered, but I hadn't heard of the SM465 tranny. SM420, NP435, NVxxxx, but not the SM465.

If I had the opportunity to grab one for a good price, how would this adapt into a flattie with a Dauntless in front of it? Mainly I'm concerned with the driveline length with that 3-1/2 inch adapter for the Dana 18...

Going to drop about 6" off your rear driveshaft, yes?

It's not just the length that you want to consider; the SM465 is a big ol' pig. I was at the salvage yard the other day picking through some T-18s, and the 465 dwarfs them in width. Just eyeballing, they're about the same height, but I'm thinking that you might have to cut into your floor pans to get the thing to fit. Don't know that for sure, just thinking that by comparing it side by side with the T-18. Novak is only showing about 30lbs more cast iron in the 465 than the 18, but to my eye they appear larger than what those numbers tell.

Great tranny, but they're huge and weigh a ton. I had one in my full size Chebby truck...well, actually I had 3 of them at different times :) . You'll never have to worry about breaking it with a V6. If anyone else needs one, I have one that needs bearings I'd let go for cheap. And yes, your driveline will be pretty stubby...

Why, the adapter is only 1" thick, it makes for the shortest driveline with a v6 that you can get with the exception of custom machining. Here is the picture of Coby's with the Novak adapter in place. The transmisson weighs 175lbs by itself and is 18" tall and 12" long. A t18 weighs in around 145lbs and the sm420 at 135lbs. There is also no bellhousing needed so that helps also.

I've got one. Novak makes a 1" adapter I'm pretty sure. Right now my 465 is hollding down the corner of the garage, but it should be in by spring.

I kinda figured that but theres no reason to use the longer adapter when a short one is available. Even if the adapter was free you'd be better off selling it and going shorter just to keep driveshaft length. MHO!

I put an SM465 in the Jeepster, and yes it's a pig. The cover must weigh 20-30 lbs, and it was a wrestling match to put it through the floorboard and line up the 3 shifter dogs in their correct place. I also had to have the shifter bent like a pretzel to clear the dash. I can't help with the engine, I have a 4.3 and chev transfer case. I did make my own slave cylinder bracket, and will be using a hydraulic clutch. My Junkyard guy gave it to me, and it looks like new inside.

Hmmm. A longer input shaft for the ol' T-90 looks better every day...

Yes you have to rebuild the trans with a new mainshaft. Here is a pic to show you how big this trans really is, this is a photo of the 1st gear removed.

I did this conversion on my 71'. Second best mod I ever did, right after the detroit. The rear driveline is short but not so short it won't work. I have about 2 1/2 inch lift and never have problems with the driveline. The Novak 1" kit is outstanding and everything is included. I wanted the tranny as high as possible so I had to basically rebuild the floor pan (pics available if you want). This is not a cheap conversion. I estimate around $1500 after everything, Novak kit, SM465 rebuild kit, D18 rebuild kit and 2 new drivelines. I only paid $50 for the tranny. Oh yeah, I also put a disc parking brake in place of the drum brake on the back of the 18.

Here you go. I have kinda fat feet and the brake and gas pedal are a bit tight. I just did a rebuild of the pivot shaft for the brake and clutch, I now have a very minor issue with the brake pedal pad tapping the gas pedal on the return. it may just be that I also put a new pad on the brake.

That settles it, I'm not going with the 465. Just no way I'm going to butcher up the floors in my Jeep to make it work, they're in too good of shape to do that. For the 1-2 wheelin' trips I make a year, the ol' T-90 works just fine!

Sorry here it goes! Steve, it would drain faster when your stuck in that Windrock mudhole next year. R) Seriously I'd try to keep the floor pans intact too!

Do the RIGHT thing and use a 420. They are meant to be in a CJ. No chopping of the floor at all, in fact I used the stock tranny tin that covers the floor with only slightly moving the hole for the shifter. It is an easy fit and the best overall low gear in a 4 speed.
    I love mine!!!!!
    Use the Novack spud adapter
