What year is that? my 65 cj5 looks exactly like that, well except my battery box is blanked (no box, cover tack welded on with no hinges)

Originally it was a battery box. We've discussed this at length in the forum before. ;)

To recap. M38 - flat fender, M38A1 - Biscuit fender with APU on side and battery box on cowl, CJ-5 - vestigal battery box cover only on cowl.

Looks like a bastage to me. M38A1 would have had the glove box on the driver's side of the dash, and the military speedo cluster. The tub looks to be M38A1 though, judging by the tail lights. Grille is also a CJ unit, as is the windshield frame. (no split glass) ;)

the guy thinks it may be a 66, it is not mine, it was posted on our local jeep board, he thought it was always a tool box and didn't know how a battery would fit. it wasn't his either, just in his shop.

Looks like a CJ5 that someone has done a fine job of cutting off the tack welded cover, welded in a tool box and then hinged the cover back on.
I have often thought of doing the same thing to mine.
Not a M38-A1 in my opinion.

i think the battery box would best be used as a cooler for frosty beverages rather than for tools ;)

A drain line for the melting ice, some spray on foam for insulation and a good seal on the lid to keep out the dust and it is definatly do-able!!

I agree with the lid being cut off and being made functional. Everything else is CJ5.

He just sent me another message on the other baord, it has a plate bolted over the dog dish on the passenger side where the power outlet would be.

I have thought about the cooler also. It would work. I just went to the garage where I had some beverage containers and a 24 pack of cans would fit easy. Two fridge packs would probably fit depending on depth. I would do it but I have to re-locate my battery up there (under hood, not battery box cover) when do my radiator swap in a few weeks.

Even has the newer style battery box cover. The early ones had 8 thumb screws holding it down. It also doesn't have the recess for the bigger military gas tank. :?

Maybe M38a1 body with a tail gate added at some point. And maybe the floor of the gas tank is rusted away? :? I'm at a loss.

Well, it looks like JEEP isn't on the side, but the dash definitely is CJ5, could have been swapped. Does appear to have the larger fuel tank fill indention. It's got me curious.
