'57 CJ5 Speedometer... mph?

Discussion in 'Early CJ5 and CJ6 Tech' started by evanjm, Oct 18, 2006.

evanjm Yeah, it's got an F-head.

This may sound dumb, but the speedometer on a normal US, non-export model 1957 CJ5 would be in mph right? It has the original cluster in it with the single large numbers going around (1, 2, 3, 4, etc.).

What has be confused is I can only find replacements for this kind of speedometer in Kilometers per hour. Is there something I'm not seeing?

    Thanks,
    Evan

Yep, should be MPH. I think I've only run across one place that sells a metric unit...I think all the others are standard. Go to the "where to find parts" thread and check some of thoes suppliers.

Out of curiousity, do you still have your original speedometer? My 55 goes up to "9", but I think mine might be later...I've seen pics of another 55 that had a slightly "fancier" speedometer that went up to 10.

The "Silver Face" 0-10 speedo was built by King-Seely & was used on 5s up to sn 49248 (mid. '57) when they changed to the black face Stewart Warner unit. I saw a pic of your dash on another thread, definately the wrong unit for a '55.:(

That's what I was afraid of :( . I've been keeping an eye out for the correct one, but I have a feeling it's going to be long wait.

Try putting a wanted add up here. I know somebody here had a loose KS one but they needed a SW instead on accounta being a later 12v model & the KS is strictly a 6 volt unit. It might be stiill available:rofl:

I'd say your best bet would be trying one of the jeep junkyards in the southwest.

So Howard, O Master Of Details. does the correct speedometer for a '56 CJ5 only go to 8? The speedo in my '56 stops at 8, and the same with a spare speedo that I have. This is the speedo in a '56 that member ringmangs1 parted out here in my town, also stops at 8. All other years seem to be 9 or 10???

This is the dash of a '57 I looked at recently. The speedo sure looks like it goes to 9 to me.

I'm pretty sure that krage sells the whole unit in Km/h, goes up to 140 if i recall correctly.

Yeah, that's what I saw, but I'm looking for the same thing in mph, and didn't see it anywhere.

    Ron, I don't know :(.

According to the parts manual there were three type of speedometers used, the King Seely six volt only unit from s/n 10001 to s/n 49248, a 6/12 unit with external instrument regulator from 49247 to 61685 and the most common unit, the SW 12 volt with internal reg in the gas guage from s/n 61684 up.

Notice something funny about the serial numbers? Hey, thats what da book sez-

I have examples of the KS & the later SW but I've never seen an "early" SW. My guess is thats what you have, easy enough to check- see if it has a little box on the back for the regulator.

Edit- I just noticed that the temp & fuel guages on your speedo are in the SW positions, the KS is opposite-

Hey Ron, you have the correct speedo for your '56. Same as mine, black/white numbered 1-8. Mine's original from 1956, I also have the KS with the Willys script on it to replace it. Two reasons for that, a-it's better looking, b- my needle laying on the bottom just like the one in your pic.

    R) R) R) Glad to hear I've got the right one, and I've got a spare just like it. The photo above isn't my speedo, but it's another '56. The funny thing is, all four of them have the broken needle! Must be an inherent weakness in them. I'm going to try and "splint" mine, by soldering a stiff wire on the backside. "Try" being the key word here.

I'm betting they get broken every time you drive over 80. I suggest you go with the 100mph speedo!
