No start when hot

    O.K. so after I drive my Jeep and get it up to normal operating temp it will not restart until it sits for about an hour or so. It just cranks until the battery dies. It also cranks real slow for the first 5-10 seconds before it starts to crank over normally (that actually happens when it's hot or cold).

    Timing is set to specs and ignition parts look good. Kind of thinking it might be the carb but not sure. I am a fuel injection guy. I am not good with carburators. Anyone have any thoughts. It's the Buick 231 OF with a Rochester 2bbl carb.

    I thought about that too. I also forgot to mention it has an electric fuel pump on the frame.

    How close is the fuel pump and fuel lines to the exhaust?

    Here's a pic. The closest part is the muffler and pump. Moving towards the motor the fuel line gets further away from the exhaust.

    Try putting a heat shield between your starter and exhaust if they are close. Also, I don't think electric pumps pull well through filters.

    Yeah I didn't even notice the filter till I read your post. I've only had the Jeep about a month. There are a few things that don't look right on it.

    Also check/clean the connections to the starter and battery terminals.

    had a similar problem with my 55 cj5... Granded it's a monster "Hurricane 4" :) but the electrical reply would be VERY similar....

    Practically replaced the entire ignition system (including the Coil). Turned out to be the condenser.

    Sounds like a big block ford problem from my muscle car phase. BFH to the starter.
