I want to paint my 1970 cj5 grey. Ive seen only a few grey jeeps and would love to see if there's any more out there so i can see what a nice shade is, want to go quite dark, but want to still see the contrast against black softtop etc. Don't want to spray paint it either, was thinking i could do it with a roller. Has anyone done this with a good result? Previous owner painted it with primer and left it, so i figured any paint job would be better than leaving it to rust. Get a lot of rain and damp weather here in The Netherlands..

I have found that Grey is one of the best color for using off road, as it is very forgiving in hiding scratches and mars from showing. I'll post a pic of my TJ if you would like, but it looks a lot like Speedbuggy's new one.

Like the TJ colour, nice and dark but not too dark, what colour is it? Body work on my cj is not perfect, got a few dints, and i need to patch a small piece thats rusted on passenger side, so i thought darker would cover any imperfections better. Although i like the blue grey of Lulu also! Gonna be tough deciding!

IMHO darker colors will show the imperfections more than lighter.

    Herobi,

I'm in the final stages of painting my 65 CJ-5 with Rustoleum Smoke Gray Gloss. I sprayed some parts and painted some with a brush and they both look good. If it ever stops raining I'll take a picture of it and post it here for you. I think it looks much closer to what was originally on the jeep for paint. They didn't have basecoat/clearcoat in 65, just glossy paint. So that's what I used to paint mine and I think it looks great and should be easy to touch up when the next tree jumps in front of me:JEEP: !

    Good luck with your paintjob...Gman

You are correct Sir! My previous fun car/non daily driver was a 1987 Buick Grand National purchased new in December, 1987. They came in any color you wanted, as long as it was black. The imperfections of factory assembly (i.e. 1/4 to roof) were clearly visible to even the non educated eye. Conversely, in my 20 years of insurance & body experience, you have to look hard to see even a large hail dent on a white car. If you want to hide imperfections, go white or a very light gray. Here is an oldie/goodie...

sorry it is in black and white, but it is a grey jeep.....

Battleship grey... hey u asked.. :)

This was a 63 M38A1 we obtained from navy about 1970 or so... fixed it up... just noticed it did not have a split windshield.... hmmmm.....it eventually became my HS driver... then a race jeep in the late 70's to about 1983

Now I wish it was as it was then.....

Wife keeps asking "when will the white Jeep run?" ITS GRAY!

Putt Putt has the same braking system --although I accidentally left that paver brick at Tellico at the top of Schoolbus *shrug*

Here's a picture of my 65 Tux with Rustoleum Gloss Smoke Grey. I like that it isn't too shiny like some of the modern (basecoat/clearcoat) paints.
Plus, It's only $7 a quart at Home Depot and you can touch up trail rash with a brush.:)

I love those grey's without metalic! They all look great! I would love to paint my jeep and would seriously consider the shiny light grey look.

Gray (and black, tan and white) solid will be one of the least expensive paints to buy - likely half the price of metallic red or purple. Solids are easier to shoot than metallics too, and easier to match (for spot repairs). A solid gray would also weather well (unlike a metallic gray, although modern base-clear silver may be better).

I'd prefer charcoal gray; light gray looks too much like buffed-out primer.
