Off Road Tires For Stock '59

Our CJ5 is used exclusively for farm chores, so it only runs on gravel and dirt.

It's been wearing road tires (and I think they are too large as well, which causes rubbing and limits the turning radius).

Any recommendations for offroad 600x16 tires? Would love to keep it under $100/tire if possible.

Anything I need to check out or confirm in terms of sizing before going further?

Saw these as I started searching: https://www.giga-tires.com/6.00-16/deestone-tires/d502-traction/tirecode/DS1250

    Thank you!

Those should work. 29" overall and 6.5" section.
My only concern would be in deeper snow or mud.

Thank you! For snow/mud would you just want something with more tread?

Indeed. Not turning up much. A friend here recommended looking at tractor tires, thought they would be cheaper.

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

Norsemans or Desert Dogs would be a great choice.

Flotation is what you need too. More width = more flotation. 7.00 x 16 would be a bit better than 6.00 x 16. However if the 6.00 size is all you can get I wouldn't turn them down.

Thank you! Does more width risk rubbing when turning? Or is that more of a height issue?

It's really both. However 7.00 is basically a stock/standard size tire so rubbing shouldn't be much of a problem, if any.

Can you get those tires locally? Physically seeing them is certainly the best idea. What size tires are on the Jeep now?

No, it's just ground clearance and as Glenn mentioned flotation. It's a good 1.5" difference at the axle where the ruts and wind rows are. It also translates to less mud in the brakes and all.

I'm running 32" 7.50-16 on mine and they work pretty well, both jeeps here have 7.50-16 trans Trac lt's (discontinued)

And here's what they look like on the farm:

I have been running a set of Deestone 600X16 NDT tires on my CJ2A, which is mostly used as a farm Jeep, for four years with no problems. I have a set of Power King "Super traction" 700 X 15 on my CJ5 which have been on it for three years and they perform well too, with very similar tread as the tire in your link.

I will be using 700 X 16 NDTs on the Jeep I am currently building.

Like the ones you linked, I insist on "mud and snow" M&S treads, the chunkier the better.

A wide tire may "float" better on soft ground, but OTH a skinny tire may cut through snow and find traction beneath.

Skinny for deep(ish) snow with a tread designed for it, at least anything up to the hubs. If you want to float over any white $h!t deeper than that get tracks. :schooled:

Did you read the reviews? I'm hard pressed to think this is a real review... if it is.... I REALLY WANT TO SEE THIS JETTA!

    Review for Deestone D502-Traction 6.00-16 C/6PLY BSW
"I have these mounted on my daily driver VW Jetta, and I'm impressed with the road manners for such an aggressive tire. Of course they're noisy and being a bias construction they flat spot in cold weather until driven at speed for a while, but they required little weight to balance and overall runout was very low."

The small shop I normally go to does not have anything that will work. I will call around some other places locally.

The current tires are Firestone Steeltex LT215/85R16 M+S

Thank you! Appreciate the recommendations. The Deestone looks good: https://www.ebay.com/itm/3247508278...UmXsaXAEgnZ4xLkogAf2JlvyWjompqqcDWiwybIiLVTLs

The Power King looks nice too. Would you say one does better off road than the other? And is the size difference noticeable? Thanks again!

Thank you! Appreciate the perspective. It will definitely see mud, snow, and lots of hills. Is there a way to gain width without worrying about rubbing?

Haha I missed that. I learned to drive on an 85 Jetta and would have loved to have a set of these.
