Gauge And Switch Questions

Let me start off by saying that I am brand new to older jeeps but eager to learn. I purchased a '67 CJ5A recently, and I'm trying to get some information on what should and shouldn't be on the dashboard.

This CJ5A has a ammeter, tachometer, and oil pressure gauge that I haven't seen on a stock CJ, but they look period correct to my untrained eye. They are lit from a bulb at the bottom of the gauge. Any info on these is greatly appreciated.

My CJ also has quite a few knobs and switches on it. With the exception of the fuel psi gauge, they all look to be quite old.

    https://ibb.co/Jsnhkq4

Here's a decoder for those pictures:
    1: "bu light"
    2: fuel tank selector
3: dash lights (map lights on corners of dash; obscured in this pic by the rollbar)
    4: left wiper
    5: choke
    6: horn
    7: headlights and gauge lights
    8: right wiper
9: blower (unlike the rest of the knobs, which are a chrome, this one is black plastic)
    10: left defrost
    11: right defrost
    12: temp
    13: cigarette lighter

I apologize for the bad angles. I've gone to college 2k miles away from the Jeep, and I have to use the photos I already have as I can't go out and take more.

Most of them are not original to the dash. The heater controls were always below the dash and there weren't any map lights or gauges other then the cluster.

Take what you have and make it yours.
You can make a skin to cover the excess holes.
If you have any "free" time you can see if the school has some drafting software and 3d printers to make all the knobs match relatively cheaply. I have the push pull knob modeled already

I consider 1967 to be "newer" rather than an "older jeep." :D

But nearly all that stuff looks aftermarket to me.

Congratulations on finding a Tuxedo Park! Lots of pics and information on this model in the forums. Here’s a few pics of my dash on my 1966 Tuxedo Park Mark IV for reference.

Unless you are wanting to restore this for car shows or something then what you have should work fine. The old stewart warner ammeter, oil pressure gauge and tach you have are fantastic and if they are working, I would use them. If you look around through the build threads on this site, or look through pictures on Ewillys.com you will rarely see two old jeeps with the same layout because people have been modifying old jeeps for 83 years.

On page 354 of the service manual (below) shows a picture of the dash layout from the factory, but the picture is bad and even the factory made multiple versions.

Post some more pictures of your jeep when you can, and welcome to the site!

    Welcome from So Cal.
Get a copy of the Factory Service Manual. My favorite version is:

As mentioned already, unless you are doing a restoration I wouldn't change any of the working gauges. Get it running, steering and stopping.
Drive it a while and then figure out what you want to change to make it yours.

Looks like it would be a 225 based on the throttle, even a 4.3 moves the transmission around a little.

The engine is the Dauntless 225. It has some custom fuel lines and a regulator that were installed by a previous owner. I'm not sure if that's due to the 12 volt conversion or possibly the rear aftermarket fuel tank.

The Jeep already runs and drives well. It's fun to drive with a 3 on the floor and practical* with the overdrive. I'm not sure what gears are in the axles yet, but it cruises 65mph at 27-2800rpm. There are some things that I need to work on, mainly fixing a bad coolant leak from the thermostat housing, a slipping belt when I put the power steering to work, and a rusted out passenger floorboard where the body mount is comes up and the tub rests on the frame.

Thank you all for your comments and helpful information.

Always the best advice. Take a deep breath before tearing stuff apart.

And yes, the FSM is mandatory.

That's not just a CJ5, but a "Tuxedo Park Mark IV" which makes it quite collectible. That is why it has chrome tail lights, windshield hinges, etc. Great little jeep you got there.

Get that heater inlet either connected to the front ahead of the radiator, convert it to recirculating, or both before you put a top on it. Otherwise it's a handsome rig with a bit of class.
Dual tanks are a plus. I'ld bet it has lockers or power locks.

I wouldn't "restore" it i'ld give it some tlc and enjoy it and it's character.

It must have an Electric fuel pump, in at least one of the tanks ? The PSI Fuel gauge & the regulator are not warranted , otherwise ......AFAIK
BTW, Welcome Aboard. That's a bit of cold:):) snow for VA ?

Currently, it has almost no heating system which gives me a nice blank canvas to work off of.

In terms of your second point, what you said is my goal for this CJ. As nice as it would look restored, I'd MUCH rather drive the Jeep as is than spend the next 3 years doing a nut and bolt restoration only to leave it to sit in a garage where nobody uses or enjoys it. Me being who I am, I'll probably daily it through any projects I'm doing. But since it isn't my only truck, I should have the time to do the harder projects like pulling off the body and fixing the passenger floor pan. The fact that it's a Tux Park will probably keep me in check from doing any V8 swaps or big lifts. I'll probably do some upgrades, such as an aluminum radiator and some high back seats shoulder belts (I know I know...) Like I said, the main goal is to have a vehicle that is both fun to drive and actually driven.

There is an electric fuel pump in the aux tank, and it has a fuel regulator under the hood. The pics are from ID, before I left for college.
