52 M38a1 Motor Pool Resto

    I have CJ5 water pump kits, I think from Peter DeBella's. Anyone out there know if these will work in A1 water pumps?

    See what I mean about the mud daubers being everywhere?

    I think the only difference is the double groove pulley. A guy on the G503 forum made pullers to replace the water pump and save the pullies.

    Just going through some pictures. I spy rock guards on the lower part of the front shocks so they're original. I'm happy about this. They're probably fine since there's low mileage on this jeep. No leaks that I see. The bushings are all dry rotted but that's not a big deal to deal with.

    OK, more parts...Clutch parts. Not pictured are fulcrum, spring. fork etc....

    Never used seal tested except for NOS. These are new production. Thoughts?

    As advised, NOS sector shaft. I have the bushings and seal too.

    Steering is out. Getting it cleaned up and ready for rebuild. There were no shims on the frame which surprised me a little. Worm shaft is good which will simplify matters. What are you guys using for lube in the steering box?

    Happy that upper bearing seems fine... As with the rest of the harness, the horn switch wires are a bit crusty but I'm hoping to work with it. I think I can solder new wires onto the switch.

    I've been using John Deere corn head grease. Also in worm drive winches.

    Good progress today since I have a few days off. Gauge cluster out. Top right, someone put a screw and bolt in stead of the correct fastener and it took a while to get that sucker out.

    Dash out. Being super careful not to break bolts. Taking my time.

    Battery box is in super shape. Seems to have a couple screws missing from the bottom. The gap you see is from missing screws. The inner box will need zip-strip because of all the old tar.

    These are the first intact trays I've seen other than ones I've bought in the past. Remarkable. They need to be blasted.

    Thanks Tim, I've heard of it but never used. I'll investigate. I plan to NEVER take this jeep apart again.

    After the rebuild, I put 80W - 90W oil in the steering box. Hasn't leaked out yet.

    Disclaimer: It's still sitting on the shelf as a spare. Sold the M38A1's I was working on for two running ones.

    For your viewing entertainment, yet another wretched vacuum motor. It's destined for PeteL's crushing and disposal facility.

    Bell housing gaskets from AJP. Expensive, but I don't plan to go back inside again for a long time.

    I tried to free up the existing pedal shaft. It's boogered. I took the path of least resistance. The shaft is repro and hope it's clocked correctly. We'll see.

    Oh, I did manage to make some time for a spin in the 54 today. Haven't driven it in 3 weeks! It was 13 degrees this AM and that half cab really cuts the wind. Thanks blalp! for your help with this. No heat in this buggy.
