I bought this HD Dif cover locally for $40.
See the fill hole is much higher than the stock cover. The pinion seal will likely lower the oil level to near the usual level, but if for some reason the seal holds an extra 1/2 gallon of oil back is there overfilling concern on a D44 differential?

Maybe it's designed for diffs titled up because of a double Cardan joint at the transfercase?

I have a version that Scott has. I use a piece of wire and approx. the old fill hole. If your diff isn't tilted I assure you the oil finds ways out especially if you don't have inner axle seals.

That looks like a front diff cover

I had a similar cover with a higher fill hole for just as Fireball described. My diff was tilted up and I filled it to the brim. I never had an issue.

For a high pinion D44. If you fill it up to the plug you are almost guaranteed leaking axle seals and lubed brakes.

I’m against lubed brakes. I’ll have to measure and probe like Rich suggested above. Thanks everyone for the advice.

Sight windows are common on motorcycle/ATV brake MC's and crankcases. You could drill the bottom boss at the proper level and glue/stake/bolt one in.
One for a Honda crank case.

Have you seen the videos of Scott driving??????
Nothing glass/plastic is safe on his jeep, let alone the diff cover!

Take the old cover and place it inside the new.
Mark the location needed and drill.

Here's my sight tube, it will eventually get an angle iron guard. The divots are the bottom level and center of the old fill hole. I could not redrill.

I drilled and tapped mine for an 1/8" NPT plug at the original level. I fill through the big plug until it runs out the small one.

This one was a mile away and $40 so it was hard to pass on.
Is there a correct HD cover?

I thought if it is leaking oil it has oil, if it’s not it doesn’t…..lol

He has a whole hour long video on the ins and out of why they are designed the way they are that is quite enlightening.
