Hi, I have a 283 chevy v8 in my 69 cj5, it has a rochester 4jet carb on it now,not a quadrajet, it needs a rebuild, has no numbers on it, so i was on a site, they said i need to tear carb apart, take pics of all the parts and gaskets and they should be able to get me the right kit , im thinking of just getting a new carb..... the intake manifold is for the small square bore carb, dont want to change manifolds.....i want a carb that will work good on hills as well as flat ground.....any suggestions?

Holley Truck Avenger. You'll need an adapter for the bolt pattern.
An Edelbrock 500 would fit without the adapter and work good for street use but I don't like them for off roading.
Actually, IME your 4GC is a pretty good carb.

X2 on switching to fuel injection. There are probably multiple choices available for an SBC.

I would rebuild that carburetor. They are fairly simple, and they work fine.

Another vote for efi. The improvement in drivability and fuel economy are definitely worth it.

Guys, if the OP doesn't want to switch intakes, I'm betting he really isn't interested in doing all the plumbing & wiring for a TBI install!
If it was mine, i would put a Quadrajet intake and carb on it, they work very well off road due to the design of the float bowl.

Sniper is impressively simply to install nowadays. You should get one for the commando!

Rebuild your old 4 Jet. These were used in the late ‘50s into early/mid ‘60s. Yours probably has an iron base, most common. I run a 4 Jet on my TR8; same engine as a ‘63 Buick 215. Mine has the aluminum base, but the rebuild kits are out there, and the carbs are simple and work pretty well.

I was working in a speed shop back when the first add on TBI kits came out, and they were a nightmare. I'm sure they've improved them greatly in the last 30 odd years but I still cringe when I think about it. Plus I've read a lot of horror stories on here about guys fighting with FI setups.

If holly makes a sniper kit that fits his intake i think its only 4 wires to hook up plus adding an O2 bung

And a fuel pump, and a fuel return line.

Holley has come out with a simplified version. Worth a look.
EFI automatically compensates for altitude, which is a plus for off roading.
But fuel delivery discussion can get like politics...

I think the Chevy 4 jet manifold uses a heat passage under the carb, like the 2G carb on a Dauntless. If it does you'll want to plug that off before putting a different carb or adapter on there.

The Holley brains are are in the throttle body and thus susceptible to heat. That would be worrisome for me as it gets heat soak.

Every major brand does it. They've been around long enough that if it was a problem, design changes would have been implemented. FiTech had to because they stuffed too much stuff into a too small box, later revising it to a larger enclosure and using a remote fuse box.
If you look at modern engines, there are plenty of electronics placed on the power plants. Modern materials and mfg. have relegated heat damage to a moot point.
@vtxtasy to your point I would have the same trepidation going in but having had a little bit of experience I think you would be impressed with the performance of the new EFI systems.
