    IMG_2884.jpeg Hi All!
Got my D18 rebuild kit from Novak today. Almost ready to get going.
I think this is my last hang up.
How do I remove the pilot bushing from the output shaft?
Doesn’t seem like there’s enough volume for the wonder bread method so what’s next?
Careful surgery with a cold chisel?

    Appreciate your advice.

Well, you taught me about the wonder bread method so I’m watching this one closely! :watch:

    Pilot bushing puller,
grease and output shaft with the hammer,
Tap the bushing and apply a slide hammer.

Always wondered if dry ice could somehow be used?

I would think just like a crank pilot bushing, fill with grease, insert snug dowel, hydro out. Maybe not enough beef there to push on?

I have a “finger” shaped hook attachment that threads onto my slide hammer that slides in and can be wedged in the back of the bore. I have only pulled one of these bushings out, and found it really wasn’t necessary. These typically don’t wear much.

    Thanks Donny
Novak gives specific dimensions and this one is well past their numbers.
Thanks dnb5853. I’ll be watching that tomorrow!

That’s what I was thinking, not enough bearing surface.
I will post whatever works or not soon.

I am sad to report that wonder bread did not work :n:

It took the hacksaw, cold chisel and brass drift method. As far as learning goes, the bore is hard enough to withstand plenty of careful hacksaw/cold chisel work.

New bushing in the freezer for the night, shaft cleaned up and waiting for tomorrow’s activity (y)

I also have to remark on the beautiful genius simplicity of these old gear boxes.

I love imagining the engineering and machine work that went into creating this awesome piece of machinery.

The skill and innovation, and the fact that it all came from somebody’s brain and skill instead of a computer really raises my appreciation.

Oh, I agree. 80-plus year old technology, still working just fine.
