This is the input shaft on the saginaw box on the 58 after removing the rag joint...

I believe its a 3/4" 30 spline, which should be reasonable to get the appropriate ujoint (I am swapping out the rag joint for the ujoint), but what is the extra 'torpedo' protrusion that sticks out further beyond the spline section. With the ujoint, this will stick out into pivot/center knuckle area and possibly cause interference? Can or should this extra protrusion be removed? I drove out the pin that you see in the pic, but that seems to want to let the spline section slide off over the inner shaft with the protrusion (although I didn't remove as it looks like it will pull apart/tear a rubber seal that is held in with span ring. Maybe I can just cut the protusion off near flush with the splined outer shaft?
    thanks....

It was really hard to get even this good of a pic, but you can sorta see I had the same issue. But… the joint I got did fit over that nipple just fine. There was enough room for the nipple to fit without trimming it. I’ll have to scour my notes to see where I got it. eBay I think.

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

I cut the one on my box off. The box came from a low mileage 73 Wagoneer. I'm using the bell coupler if it matters.

I ordered the 13/16 36 spline by mistake, so will have to wait just a bit to get the proper 3/4 30 spline ujoint...it will be mating to 3/4 DD for the steering shaft, so we'll see if it causes interference.
If does interfere I'll go this route...
Not sure what mine is out of other than AMC era Jeep...I think the column is a couple inches too long for cj7, so guessing its out of an FSJ. All the connections used 1" 48 spline and the steering shaft had a slip joint, it was just bottomed out. New slip joint steering shaft from Borgeson arrived - its 3/4DD on box end and 1"DD on the steering column side, but can't do much with it until I get the box finished up - it much easier getting it fitted up on the bench than under the front cross-member.

The intermediate steering shaft (shaft between steering column and gear) from a mid-1980's Chevy S10 fits onto this steering gear without issue. Actually, one end fits onto the steering gear and the other fits the end of a GM steering column. That is what I'm using in my flat fender. It looks something like this: Dorman 425-274 Dorman Steering Shafts | Summit Racing

Got the appropriate ujoint to connect to the steering box input shaft in place of the rag joint....the odd little stick-out piece will interfere with the ujoint once the joint is slid all the way on for the set screw to sit in the groove behind the splines (this also appears to bring the front of the splines flush to the inside of the ujoint splines....so guess its gonna have to get cut off.

I have cut that thing off several times. Think of it as weight reduction.

I cut mine off just so I could get more spline engagement….. something comforting about it.

This is why I get spud shafts from McRuff - extends past the cross member and then I put the knuckle in the shaft setup.
