Using a 78-85 rear dump manifold actually makes a saginaw conversion much easier. Headers have to go somewhere and are usually much larger then a single pipe. The federal safety standard actually calls for the exhaust to exit the vehicle behind any seating compartment. If you have a back seat, exhaust that exits in front of the rear wheel isn't even legal technically. Not all states enforce FSS or have annual inspections though so your location may differ.

Those photos are perfect. I did see in another photo I have that I do have the same pump with the line off the back for the carb feed.
    Thanks.

I'm really flexible on this issue. Don't you have one of those rear dumps on a shelf you want to sell me?

If he does not - let me know. I think I still have a few of them. I moved AWAY from the standard manifold to the headers so I had more clearance on things. Also helped design the block hugger headers for the 225 sold by Novak.

FWIW it IS possible to run Saginaw steering with stock exhaust....mine is set up that way.
    But it's very tight clearances.

I bought that one and put it on my 69 cj5 with the 225. It ran great right out of the box. Only bad part is it’s a little pricey

From what I read, if you use a high mount power steering pump mount from a Buick 350. It will bolt right up and pulleys line up. Use Mcruff steering box mount, no frame mods and no need to change exhaust routing.

Good for someone starting out but I’ve already collected all the parts for this modification. Switching to rear dump manifold I only would have to sell off the headers. I doubt AA would take them back as it’s been about a year?

You can look at my site and see what it looks like to use the AA headers Axle - Trans - Pedals the one with the full engine bay you can see the headers, steering and such there. You can also see pics of the block huggers on that site Novak Headers in an earlier version of the rig. My neighbor runs them and has the exhaust exiting the back of the jeep.

I have the original rochester 2g carb and rebuilt it from a kit from autozone, not at all an undoable process for a novice mechanic. But I ordered the kit by year and model and it did not run great. When you order the kit make sure you order it by the number stamped on the carb. There was a part in the kit from autozone that was wrong, I ended up getting the correct part through Mikes carburetors. As for the fuel pump it should be marked IN from tank out to filter. If you only have two ports on the pump the fuel filter should have three ports, the small one a return to top of tank, and if three ports on the pump small port return to top of tank and the filter should have two ports also marked flow from pump and out to carb. I just went through this with a failed pump this past weekend. Good luck finding one in stock at any parts store, it will most likely need to be ordered. I do not know why there are two different systems or which is better. I hope someone know and answers.
