F134 Oil Pressure Issues Again

I went for a drive today and the oil pressure stayed around 20-25psi at 45mph and 5psi at idle. When I press on the accelerator pedal the oil pressure slowly rises. I think the oil pump is failing or the oil pump puckup tube is cracked.

I don't remember what problems you had before. Same symptoms? Did it get better? Have you checked the relief spring on the pump?

I shimmed the spring in the pump with #10 washers. And it has been good since. The oil pressure before was 10psi at idle and 50-55psi while driving.

I would start by checking the spring again, make sure it didn't break. Oil pump shouldn't all of the sudden go bad, it would be very gradual generally. Obviously you've made sure it has enough oil so I won't ask. Is the oil pickup possibly becoming clogged? What kind of line do you have going to the pressure gauge?

It's a 1/4 inch line going to the gauge and the gauge is a AC gauge. I have never had the pan off I might start there and see what I can find.

I would strain your motor oil through a white t shirt to look for metal. If you lost oil pressure once, and then got it back by tweaking the pump and it is now going lower you may have an issue causing wear.

Well I pulled the pan off today and found the oil pump pickup screen to full of some type of gasket material. Next I'm going to pull the pump and take it apart.

Well, I imagine cleaning that should solve the problem.

I hope it does I found a reman oil pump that is still new in the box from the 50's or 60's i'm going to install it and clean the pan the pickup tube. Then I'll see what happens if it's still low on pressure then I'll know its internal wear on the bearings. I have a rebuilt F134 sitting in the garage waiting so all hope is not lost.

Umm, where did the gasket material come from?

I actually dropped the pan & pumped oil under pressure into the gallery through the oil sender port to see where it comes out at- 90% if not more comes through the timing gear oiler & oil filter return.

The crank & rod bearings, at least fresh ones, "weep".

    The camshaft ones "dribble".

If you try this at home wear goggles.

    Don't ask how I know.

How were you able to pump oil into the oil galley? What type of pump did you use manual or electric?

I built a vessel out of PVC (80 PSI rated) pipe, about a foot long, with a shraeder valve on one end & a valve & whip end on the other. Filled to about 3/4 with oil, pressurized it to about 40 PSI screwed the whip end into the sender port & opened the valve- got about 10 seconds of flow on each shot.

p.s.- except for a head shaped outline it makes a mess on the floor.

p.p.s.- of course while you have the pan off you might as well plastigauge the bearings anyhow

So I was looking at oil pumps for a F134 and found there are two different type housings aluminum and cast iron. Are there any big differences between them internally?

The oil pump for the F-Head 134 engine will also fit the L-Head 134 that uses meshing timing gears. You need a different oil pump for the L-Head 134 engine that uses a timing chain instead of meshing gears.

That's a good question when I cleaned the pan at work I noticed the old gasket had been glued on with yellow weather strip adhesive. So maybe it was replaced at some point in time. I'm going to try and reinstall the pan tomorrow I hope all the junk in the screen was the problem.

The symptoms sure point to that.

Ok the new pump came in today and one thing I noticed is it does not have a oil port on the side of the housing for the shaft. Will that affect anything? I did a search and found that some pumps have been seizing up?

I don't know about the oil port , but where did you get the pump from?
