I should remember what this was for as I drove Jeeps in Army/Nam but it escapes me. I know right side is for snorkel. I know it will be a duh moment when someone tells me but my 67 year old brain is drawing a blank and I cannot find anything on it anywhere. Thanks

I thought it was for a fender mount Siren, I learn something here every day.

If you're referring to the indentations on the edge of each side of the hood -- which is all I can interpret from the picture and question -- they're for putting your fingers in when lifting the hood.

Wasn't it also for running the cable fro the siren on the ambulance models?

1960, you are right, and one some models it was for the horn which was mounted on the fender... We had a 6000 lb rough terrain forklift that needed a horn. I went to PDO and pulled one off a white ambulance, so our OD green forklift had a white horn. We never had to stand any equipment inspections, so we left it that way. It was still there when I retired in 1992.

Not that it proves anything officially, but every M170 I've seen had the standard blackout lamp location, and any with sirens had it mounted on the right fender.
