I've a guy that works for me is an Amsoil dealer. I can get the stuff relatively cheap. Any reason I shouldn't run it in my axles, trans and transfer case in my bone stock '62 CJ5?
    Thanks in advance!

For the tranny & transfer case it needs to type GL-4 to protect the brass parts. Most modern lubes are GL-5 and are more acidic.

This Sta-lube is one of the few brands of GL4 available. I don't know about Amsoil's product.

Thanks. Does the GL5 not have the correct additive? I don't want to get technical....just curious.

Couldn't find Sta-lube locally but I was able to buy it on Amazon. Buy a pump with it. Good stuff.

Amsoil makes a GL4 gear oil, that's what I went with after a bit of research/opinion shopping-

    Gear oil- GL4/GL5

This topic has been extensively covered on this site and many others, especially those for vintage equipment like tractors and classic cars. Try googling.

In short, newer specs like GL5 have more sulphur, which is corrosive to brass/bronze components.

Amsoil is good oil it's generally expensive as heck. I wouldn't pay a bunch of extra for it thought, which sounds like you wouldn't be anyhow.

I have been able to purchase my gl-4 at Napa. Right off hand I do not remember what brand it was.

It actually isn't that expensive if you opt for the preferred customer program. $20 a year, but you save quite a bit if you buy a lot of oil. We have five vehicles in the family, so it saves me a bunch of money. Even after shipping, a quart of motor oil is still still cheaper than "off the shelf" at my local store. Some good deals that pop up every other month or so, such as free shipping over $50. I buy the Z-ROD line for the 258, has extra zinc. I also switched my 2015 Focus ST over to the more expensive Signature Series line. It definitely works, it dropped my oil temperature by 15 degrees.

I've always been curious about effects on compression. Anyone ever checked readings for before and after switching to synthetic?

So because of this question I started looking around of more information on GL-1 GL-5 ..... It's enough to make your head explode. If you really want a laugh, read the 17 page thread over on the Steel Soldiers board.

I run Amsoil in my motorcycle, made the transmission and clutch work way smoother.
I pay $11.00 a quart, any synthetic is roughly $8.50-9.00 a quart or more. Would I run it in my jeep, probably never, the jeep is not driven enough and most things in the jeep would only be worse not better.
