Leaf Spring Replacement . . .

I put a Meyer hard top on Percival (59 CJ5), and his leaf springs (original, but repacked about 12 years ago) aren't up to the additional 350 lbs. I've got the replacements (all around) here, and am looking forward to replacing them myself. It looks like a pretty straightforward job; axles on jack stands, prop up frame, remove wheel, shocks, U bolts, and leaf springs in that order, install new ones, and replace everything.

Is there anything that I've forgotten, or overlooked? The shackles and bushings are maybe 10 yrs old, but few miles.

    Thanks in advance!

New u-bolts. They should not be reused.

2X on what Timgr said. I learned the hard way about re-using U-bolts...

Getting the old bushings out is often the toughest part, if required. May require violence.

Thanks all. The new springs come with bushings installed, so I'm good there. I'll have to order some new U bolts.

yep... regarding bushings. They probably wont come out in any recognizable form. Glad they are already in springs!

This has been discussed a lot in old posts. If you don't need to replace the bushings, great; but if you do, it will be worthwhile to look at old posts about how to make it easier.

Thanks again all. I replaced the rear springs this afternoon and probably picked up close to 2" in the rear. No drama to report, everything went smoothly. Good call on the new U bolts, I see why most folks just cut off the old ones!

Timely post for me with my frame up restore. Can I get any u-bolts, right size of course, or do I need to order some from one of the jeep parts suppliers? Are they a special metal? I assume they would be hardened or something.

The u-bolt material is mild steel. You can go to any suspension shop and they can make you the u-bolts. 1/2" diameter u-bolts are a common upgrade from the 3/8".
