Step Kits for Willys & Jeep Vehicles

Hope this link works. I bought a set of these but only put the passenger side on for the wife. Before that it was the small folding step stool with a rope for her to pull in.

If you aren't totally opposed to the console idea, you could always cut the bottom out for access to your fuel switch. Stick a battery disconnect switch in there too for a clever anti theft device if the console is lockable.

Whatever you do, try to make your cup holder insulated. There's a lot of ice-melting heat blowing and radiating under your drink in a CJ.

As far as a step, there's always the redneck way...

That redneck chain looks like it could hurt me. I do enough damage to myself swinging my leg up to get in the Jeep on ice. Been down twice.
I was going to mention the step stool and rope bit.

That's exactly what I DON'T want...seen way too many of those demolished on rocks.
In fact, when I first got my Jeep if it had some brackets still bolted on the underside that were the remains of those Factory type steps.

I'm with you on the factory style step. Mine has the damaged under side on the passenger where one was once. I'm thinking about making a removable one so it can be used only when needed. Thinking of something like square tubing like a receiver hitch to slide in like a hitch would. Locking pin to hold it in while driving. Just kicking it around for now. Otherwise that bracket mention above in post 13 may work out. It's just maybe a bit high.

The Land Rover steps incorporate the use of springs in their function and folding. With some springs and hinges a fab shop should be able to modify the brackets so they would pivot and allow the step to move up and back, or forward to slide over obstacles. Also make a bit of a skid plate for the step bottom so there is no surface to catch on anything.

Instead of the redneck chain, I have seen step rungs suspended from sections of very heavy wire cable. More rigid, but can still bend to prevent rock damage.

All the loaders at work use a similar step but use rubber to hang the tread.

How about something like one of those ladders/steps that hang on the side of an above-ground pool? Some kinda grapple-hook like affair that hangs over your door edge to provide a step up, and once you are in the seat just remove the step-aide from the door frame.

That looks like a pretty good design. :)

And removable like I wanted without the time to figure out and make.

I think you could fab up something close for a whole lot less money. And I really like this idea. You could make some rock sliders that incorporated some sort of receiver and then just slide it in and out as needed.
