Tie Rod Flip?

I am thinking of moving the tie rods (long tie rod conversion) on my 1947 CJ from below the steering arm to the top.

Ream the arms to accept a reverse tapered bushing.

Obtain a 'flipped' two hole tie rod end.

'Flip' the long tie rod and move the shorter link to the top of the two-hole TR end.

Probably re-use the newish TREs currently in place.

Anybody done this? How did it work out?

    Norcal69's common sense build.
I did it and it worked out great. I used 3 bushings from TMR customs. For the right side, I drilled out a factory jeep tie rod end and welded a flip bushing in it. You may end up needing to change your pitman arm to match up with your drag link height. Everyone's build is different, I needed a drop pitman arm as I was working around a previous owners work. If you look on the next page in my build you can see the end result.

I did it also. Pretty easy and a great upgrade. My Jeep used to really bind up when twisted. The reamer is a bit pricey. I used OK4WD bushings.

Have you considered switching to a two hole knuckle and getting rid of the double tie rod end?

    Wait a sec...
First time I read this I thought that's what he meant. Now I see it's not.

Looks like the tie rod end with the hole is bent backwards, may be the picture. When I did mine the new end from AA is bent forward to allow more room for the drag link.

What was the part you bought to do the flip? I have similar situations on my 62 cj as the picture above. Feel if I hit a bump/speed bump it may rub or break my tie rod linkage.

It's actually the opposite. Droop brings it closer to the spring.

So with my 2.5 skyjacker leafs and I hit a bump it won't hit my linkage?

The problem comes when you drop a tire in a hole or cross up your suspension while your steering is turned or turning. As your axle (and tie rod) drops, your springs don't drop as far, so they come closer to your tie rod. The bigger parts (tie rod ends, clamps, etc...) can get hung up on the springs.

I doubt there would be enough force to break anything, but it could cause a minor tie rod bend, or a dangerous second or two at minimum.

So basically I should do the flip? Just need to know what I need before everything is mounted. So far just the tie rod and link is mounted not the drag link

With the double tie rod end mounted as you have it, the hole where the draglink end mounts should be more forward of the tie rod. I looked on the Advance Adapter website and the kit says it no longer contains tie rod ends. It might be a good idea to go to the two hole knuckle. Will give you easier steering due to the leverage.

I could tell just put a two hole knuckle on my 62 though. Requires more than that right? And would O'Reilly order such parts?

I couldn't just bolt a 2 hole knuckle up. Sorry autocorrect
