Hello and thanks for allowing me to join this great forum. I have recently aquired a 59 CJ5 (right out of the mud) with a hard top. Are all the factory hardtops the same? Are they made by a company called Meyers/Orville. My hard top looks similar to some I've seen on line however my doors don't close flush, they are surface mounted and attached with a piano type hinge instead of two hinges. The windows slide down not crank. The rear door lifts slightly and then slides in on a rail. Everything looks original. Any information on the top would be greatly appreaciated. I'm not sure I am allowed to add a picture and if so I don't know how so if someone can direct me to those instruction that would be great also. Many thanks

By the '70s, Jeep was supplying the Meyer cab as factory equipment, from the option list. The Meyer cab could also be purchased through the Jeep parts system as "Jeep Approved Special Equipment," for installation at the dealer or by the customer.

There were several makers of steel and aluminum cabs for these Jeeps. The CJ-3B page has some info about a few of them: http://www.film.queensu.ca/cj3b/Hardtop.html

From what I can see in your avatar pic, looks like a Koenig cab. I have the same one for my '67 sitting (in pieces) in the attic. The lid is plastic/fiberglass, so be careful with it. On Tim's link look under delivery bodies.

Thanks so much. It sat where it was for twenty years. I unstuck it from the mud yesterday and it seems pretty solid. After sitting in the mud for all that time the front tires were still inflated. A good omen. They don't spin but they still have air in them. Should get it home today...can't wait.

Are you going to restore the Jeep? I have a '59 as well.

I'm not sure yet. I don't really want a pristine vehicle. I'd like it to look respectable and function.

Sorry about the delay. I have just had it towed in yesterday and I can't keep my hands off it. I'm in Bondville (Winhall) about two hours South of you. Someday I may take you up on your offer. I'd love to check out your 56 and chew the fat for a while.

Thanks for the warm welcomes! I have another body question. The rectangular metal cap on the cowl on the passenger side and the small raised rectangle on the cowl on the drivers side. What were they for?

That's the battery box delete. Willys used the same bodies for the CJ5 that they used for the M38A1 (the military version of the CJ5). They put that delete plate in the civilian version. On the military version, that serves as a hatch door to get to the two 12 volt batteries which are stored underneath. You should have a similar delete plate on the hood, which was for the military river fording kit on the M38A1.
