Sway bar

Is anyone out there running a sway bar under their Jeep? I've finally got the D30 under there, and I'm just wondering if I try to mount the sway bar or not?

Swap is from an 81 CJ7 NT if that makes any difference!

I think Tarry99's build thread had a front sway bar on his stock frame version. Check his build thread. Thinking about that for my 3B also but don't think there is room with my steering arrangement. The default is Rancho 9000 adjustable shocks that you can set stiff for on-road.

What kind of springs are you running? They used a sway bar '76 or later on CJs. You should be able to make one of those work with some adaption. Earlier Jeeps typically had enough spring stiffness so that a sway bar was not needed.

I'll have a look at Tarry's build, thanks!

I've got stock leaf springs (7) and those are only a year or so old.

I actually took all the parts from that 81. The entire axle/brake setup, the sway bar, and the PS gear box, pump, and tilt column. So, I have everything as it would fit on the 81...it's just a question of making the sway bar mount to the frame like it was on that 81 or if I should skip it and just run it without.

I would agree with Tim's point about the typical early springs that are mostly already to stiff and would hardly need any form of roll resistance to control the chassis.........In my case the Jeep that I installed a factory CJ sway bar in had Holbrook "Long Leave" suspension front and rear which is a fantastic Flexy off road package but can be a little seat of the pants loose while driving on the pavement.

    There are some pictures here:http://www.earlycj5.net/forums/showthread.php?107335-Making-my-CJ-5-into-a-CJ-6-II/page11

It is tight under there but a conventional CJ sway bar can be installed using the D-30 axle............forget about using the stock cast Iron CJ frame brackets as they just will not work. And plan on mounting the bar link directly to the axle via some welded tabs , works much better.

I put sway bars on my 67 and it helped alot. I run a hard top year round and carry 4 people quite often. the front one is off a golf cart its not very big maybe 3/4 or 7/8" then i added the back one and it made it better yet. But I dont know what the rear one is from i just found it on the ground at the junk yard. i think i had to heat and bend the arms in on both. but i was able to use the frame mounts that came with the bars and made up some drop links for the front. the rears are from an audi a4 i had them on hand. I got lucky it fits right around the exhaust. The front mounts on the springs look weak but theyve held up fine. The only problem i have is the steering shock smacks against the frame mount and is all dented up but it still works so why fix it.

Awesome. Thanks for the responses guys! And for the pictures, especially.

I think that I'll save myself the extra work now, and rock it without the sway bar. I've never driven it with one so, I don't think I'll be missing much! I will hold onto it though for the potential addition or anything that comes up down the line.

You guys putting disconnects in those systems? I've seem more than my fair share of roll overs caused by not having the sway bar disconnected.

    Just curious.
