it seems to me lot of fuel per mile = 8,9 miles per gallon

I wanted to know - because my fuel gauge is far from perfect - how much fuel I use.
Because I had already be out of fuel, it seemed to me that the fuel tank had some capacity, I made a test on 100 km.

I use my Jeep on small travels, some on tracks and partly only in 2nd gear.:p

I was surprised to add 26 liters after 100km. With a Hurricane 4 cyl engine, and Solex carb.
It is twice than what I thought.mehh
Maybe my carb is not well fixed.:?
Or these small travels need a lot of fuel at the start.
    26 litres = 6.87 gallons
    100km = 62 miles
    8,9 miles per gallon:oops:

What I checked on my Audi is that whet I start the engine (automatic choke, fuel, 6 cyl it shows a consumption of ...40 liters/100km
but on normal trafic I use 9,5 liters per 100km.
Difficult to calculate conversion ... But this is not the subject.:D

Alan, are you sure your odometer is accurate?

I would like to say "good joke".
Frankly speaking, I don't know in fact. It is a new one. But it seems reasonable.
    This is for 20 days of work. Many starts per day. Go out the garage, some heating, going to shop or to neighbor, etc..;
Each start must use a good quantity of our precious liquid.

Anyhow, I'll check the odometer. But I won't wait for a big change.

Alan that is pretty standard gas mileage for these Jeeps with a Fhead. Mine gets about the same. You can tune them to get maybe 12 mpg but that is about it.

Trust me I know about trying to convert - I lived in England and that is just as difficult despite the fact they do not actually use the metric system for anything.

    You kill me!mehh

Someone invented long ago the "metric" system with the correspondence between all (or nearly) solid and liquid.
It is a good idea, why not use it? What is the advantages or other measurement systems? Wide subject!

If you say so... When I made a long trip non-stop I used less, maybe 15 liters for 100km! (conversion?) but it was a smaller carb, not this soled. but the use in many start & stop, restart, slow drive in tracks, some 4wd, it is awful.

Your Jeep was made in an era when gas was very cheap. Who worried about MPG back then?

oh man... Okay, let's open a big can of worms.

Metric is a scientific-based decimal system, "invented" as you say, to serve the cold logic of of technology.
Imperial is a human-based system, developed and evolved over thousands of years in response to actual human needs.

A yard is about the length of a human arm. A hundred pounds is about what a man can lift. An acre is about what a horse can plow in one day, a mile is a thousand paces, etc...

Biggest practical advantage of the imperial system, based on a "dozen" inches in a foot and so on, is the ability to easily divide into many different fractions (thirds, quarters, etc.) With a only piece of string I can lay out a division of four windows in a wall, or three, or two, etc.. It is simple to share a quantity of items equally in many different ways. It serves many everyday needs rather well - or else it would never have evolved as it did.

In the decimal system, on the other hand, simple fractions may become cumbersome calculations with imprecise answers. (Just try to divide ten by three.... it can't be done!)

Metrics are for machines. Imperial is for people.

But what is really annoying is when my truck has both types of fasteners and I have to carry two sets of wrenchs!!! (We won't even mention "Whitworth...")
Since the Metric system was a consequence of the French Revolution, perhaps we have you to blame Alan! ;)

I remember when i drove my 66 cj5 Fhead (all stock) in the 70s I would be happy when I managed to get 12 miles per imperial gal on the hyway at 50 mph, city would be 9 mpg. My 76 with the 258 (all stock) would get 14 mpg hyway but at least it would go go 70 mph. I do much better with my 4.3 in my cj3a at 18 mpg still at 50 mph. Still saving for an overdrive. Phil

Alan, the situation you describe will definitely result in horrible fuel mileage. I haven't ever tried to calculate mpg under that type of situation. You aren't alone in realizing how much more efficient on highway, steady driving is.

My wife worries because twice I went out of fuel, and I explain that I filled the tank not long ago...Now I know. I need to go more frequently to the gas station. And I keep a 5l can under my seat. It was provided with my Jeep, comes from USA and maybe was included with a new Jeep?.

Thanks to all, Tonka for the graphic, Petel for the explanation about Imperial system which I cannot understand, I guess that it is logic.
I have no problem with wrenches, but I feel that it is possible, I had problem between 13 and 14mm. But I am not a great mechanic.

The metric system was probably a result of what we call "le siècle des Lumières" translation Century of lights?
This was il all Europe, and maybe in US around 1700.
This was the period of the "Encyclopedie" a sort of dictionary describing all technologies and ideas at this time.
Can we be proud of this? Writers like Voltaire, (and more IMO) Diderot in France gave a modern vision of humanity.

With all these big names, Newton, Locke, Descartes ... we can be surprised to see that some horrible events are possible.
The fact is that we know how to explain them, we understand human behavior more and more, but...other subject.

Not only do we conflict in imperial vs. metric, but we can't even agree on whether fuel volume or distance should be in the numerator.

X2 brian p got my origional carb to a high of 16mpg on interstate 70 avg 14mpg with a trailer in tow at 60mph. This was before I had an overdrive which didn't help mpg at 60mph.

Not bad 1960WillysCJ5 - that is actually 3 MPG better than my 63 CJ5 Jeep when it was brand new. Does not sound like much but the difference between 14 MPG and 17 MPG is pretty big percentage wise. Not sure how you did it unless you have OD - I have never seen a fhead Jeep get anywhere near that.

Makes me want to tune mine really good, and try it out.
