Original Intermediate Dash Lamp Question

I was fortunate enough to find a couple of original intermediate dash lamps for the lights and hazard switches. When the lights are on, they clearly read "LIGHTS" (w/o the headlight symbol) and "HAZARD" in green. But, they are very difficult to read when the lights are off. My questions are these: 1) did they originally have white lettering (like the later aftermarket blue-lit ones do)?, and 2) if so, is there a fix?

Btw, I still need a green-lit one for the wiper/washer switch. How did this one read? "WASHER"? "WIPER/WASHER"? Were there any symbols on it?

Mine says WIPER WASHER. No symbols.

Thanks. Does yours have white lettering that allows you to read it in day light as well?

Matt, I have a '75 CJ6 almost totally stock. The lettering is in white, then @ night they have a green background when headlights are on. The wiper says wiperwasher w/no symbols. The symbols were on the '76 & up.

Thanks, Julie. That's just the information I was looking for. I figured as much. Is there a hyphen or dash between the wiper washer? The one I currently have is backlit in blue and reads "WIPER-WASHER" w/ no symbols.

I have a 74 Cj5 that reads without a hyphen or dash. only words. Mine are barely visable during the day but I doubt that is how they should be.

Matt, Ditto to 74Cjake5's reply-it says WIPER WASHER just w/a space, no hyphen or dash.

Note that if the backlighting color isn't exactly what you want, you can change it by using transparency overlays that you get at an office supply store. The thin plastic sheets in various colors meant to be used with an overhead projector (grab them fast because this old-school technology probably wont' be with us much longer in the era of Powerpoint). Cut the transparency in the size of the light bezel, gently pry the face off the light (the tiny metal tabs can be bent open, separating the bezel from the light housing), insert the transparency behind the face and voila! Experiment with different color combinations to get the shade you want. Remember that yellow+blue=green, etc.

Thanks for the suggestion. Perhaps I can add a little yellow to the back of my WIPER WASHER and get the green I'm looking for.
