I took the jeep out the other day and noticed that when I push down on the gas the needle on the preassure gauge stays in the middle but when I'm at idle the needle goes up toward the the red. Is this supposed to happen? What should I check for?

Well Your oil press gauge is definitely not stock so it would be a WAG to know what you have. What is the pressure in lbs when running down the road and what is the idle pressure in lbs at idle?

The gage says 40 to 35 while driving and 30 to 20 while on idel... Is it normal?

Bad and small pic but this is roughly where the needle is

Not great, but normal for an engine with some miles. The pressure will always be lower at idle than on the highway.

    You have any bad noises?

No bad noises and it runs great! I just wasn't sure if it was normal.

If you are running original engine in that 69 without an overhaul you might consider running straight 40 weight oil and a non fram filter. It will help with your oil pressure. Just a thought.

Can you put a mechanical gauge on it to double check the pressure? To rule out a sending unit or electronic gauge?

I might have to try that because It is the original engine and I'm running a Fram filter...
this might be a dumb question but where do I put the mechanical gauge?

  10. where the electric sending unit goes there would be a fitting and tubing the goes with the gauge

I just happen to have a photo of the oil pressure hook up. There is normally an alternator above this so you can't see it from the top except when you pull the alt bracket.

No such thing as a dumb question.... Behind the oil filter you'll find your sending unit, remove the "can" looking thing and screw in a mechanical gauge in, and see what kind of pressure you have.IIRC it should be 1/8 pipe thread.

The design of the engine is not the best for moving oil
