Through some mishap in reality, I have ended up with David Eilers "49 CJ 3A" "race Jeep". As it presently sits, only the windshield frame is a 3A part. The frame is from an intermediate CJ 5 with custom, out boarded 2.5" wide, long leaf springs, the fronts being 46" long, the rears 50". Stock intermediate axles, centered flanged D44 rear and D30 front. The rear sports a Detroit Locker, front is open. 3.73 gears. Transfer case is a D20 with the D18 2.46:1 gear set and Bronco sliding gear. Transmission is a T18 with what appears to be a Novak transfer case adapter and is directly bolted to the 231 even fire bell housing. The tub is fiberglass, probably a Bobcat version with a few doodads I could do without but give the history, will remain. The fenders may also be Bobcat but David extend these to match the 84" wheelbase. There is a tailgate opening but no tailgate. David had the tire carrier sticking out there. GM tilt column, Saginaw 800 box mounted on AA's mount-well done

My impression is this has a lot of potential but just about everything needs some attention. The person I purchased it from (and who purchased it from David) left it out uncovered for at least a year. The T18, sans shifter with only a paper towel in the hole, had about 1 1/2 cups of water in it and both the carb and exhaust manifolds were missing from the engine. I have not yet determined if I can free the 231 but it will not be staying under the hood anyway. It is going to get replaced with the warmed over 381 sbc I pulled from the 3B (the tub appears to have been molded with a sbc in mind as there is 4" from the back of the block to the firewall indent).

The six point frame mounted roll cage was decently designed and put together. It also appears it will fit under a TigerTop.

It currently has fiberglass "race" bucket seats, the covering for which is presently in the dumpster. They are positioned really well but i'm not to keen on the mounting and will mount new seats off the cage. There is also zero for other creature comforts, not surprising given David's intended use but it appears like another Vintage Air Gen II will fit well under the dash.

My intent is to make this into a viable trail rig. The current CR, being 59:1, should be totally adequate with a sbc under the hood. It is going to obviously need new seats/mounting and I will be replacing the grill for one a little closer to stock (not fond of David's 5 1/2 headlight conversion).

The project did include a really nice Griffin radiator, but the electric fan is going to be discarded for the mechanical variety. I have 50 years worth of parts either shucked, not used, or replaced from the 3B that are directly applicable to this so the expense shouldn't be too astronomical.

That's really cool.
The tub bears a lot of similarity to the AJ's tub on my flatfender. It doesn't look like the Bobcat bodies I've seen. The hood definitely is.
Sure you wouldn't want a fresh 30 over 231 evenfire with Lunati cam, th350 and rebuilt dana 300 combo in that? :ninja:

left it out uncovered for at least a year.
Good on ya for grabbing it. I saw the pic of it sitting outside in the weeds, so sad. You probably know that a guy on OWF is trying to revive "eWillys" and now you're doing the same with Dave's Jeep. Keeping the legend going AND owning a piece of Jeep history... Nice!

I'm still in the evaluation phase of this project but know enough now that the project is going to revert to a rolling chassis with the drivetrain pulled. I drained about a cup and a half of water out of the T18 and the engine is frozen solid despite the MM oil/ATF treatment. That could be the result of either the transmission, the engine, or both as there is no clutch linkage. If I get time today, I'll jury rig a pipe clamp on the throwout arm and see if that changes anything. The spark plugs were still new and rust free, slightly encouraging.

Where David has the engine sitting, the 231's oil filter was going to have a REALLY short existence but that no doubt was an effort to keep everything more or less under the hood. The SBC will not have the oil filter problem but hood clearance is most likely still going to be an issue. I have another ProFlo 4 system sitting on the shelf and would like to use it on this. Maybe a 1" body lift is in order. That would also allow some pucks under the grill which is presently sitting directly on Dave's fabricated cross member with no provision for any flex.

The Willys still has the stock intermediate driveshafts. The rear is going to need a double cardan with the present lift and the front is fully compressed and will need shortened or replaced, probably the latter with another double cardan version.

It is most definitely a piece of Jeep history. It would have been a lot easier project if it had not been literally put out to pasture. But so goes life.

Dave actually hand laid up the hood, fully custom and about 4" longer than stock. It has the rear steel reinforcing "hoop" from a stock hood molded into it. The 231 is supposed to have some sort of aftermarket cam, has a Performer manifold, Holley Truck Avenger carb (hopefully a 390 cfm but haven't checked that), and it came with two pairs of chromed fenderwell headers (Hedman?), along with a pair of Holley aluminum valve covers. It too was supposedly rebuilt. It would be perfect in Old Blue.

Lost Biscuit is going to get the warmed over 381 sbc I pulled from the 3B:D. I would love to find another pair of Hooker 9810's or AA's fenderwell headers for it's new application but that has been a fruitless search in the past. And while the D300 would be nice, the D20 (D18/Bronco gear set) is already mated to the T18, my perfered 4 speed.

And did I mention I dislike autos, at least the kind that don't have triggers. But even there, I prefer a good old mechanical revolver with all rounds pre-chambered-and no, I don't leave any of them empty.

Dang, that thing is so cool! Love the tires, what are those? It has the feel of "Point it in a direction, stab the skinny pedal, drop the clutch and try not to die"

Great looking previous build. It sounds like it ended up in the right hands to bring it back to life. To me, a 381 SBC is overkill, but you know what your doing.
I find it interesting that the power Saginaw box is looped as a manual. I ran mine the same way for over 20 years. With a pump attached, the steering was dead feeling with no feedback, but i was only running 29” and 30” tires.

I would think its like that to keep it clean during the rebuild. If I remember correctly from the old eWillys days, Dave started this project at his Moms house before she passed.

The tub has way larger rear wheel openings than stock and appears to have been molded that way. 35's anyone?

Lucked out on the T18. I think both this and the D20 are from an IHC.

Moved all the body pieces except the grill down to one of the machine sheds this morning.

Rear cage mount. Yep, there is going to be a LOT of grinding and rewelding on this project.

Where the rear driveshaft presently sits, only slightly better with the tub on.

Pulled the engine/transmission/D20 after lunch.

I was worried the fuel tank had collected water but that concern was a moot point. It was toast anyway. The filler vent has apparently had multiple attempts at repair and all failed. I can fabricate a somewhat larger tank that will fit the same space and incorporate an in-tank fuel pump for the EFI.
