I made this light duty brass hammer today. It's for installing frets on guitars. It's inspired by one Crimson Guitars in the UK makes, but costs far too much to send to the US. Besides...This was fun to make.

I used my drill to turn the 1/2 brass while using a hack saw to cut a groove. There's a snap ring that keeps the brass from coming out of the back of the hammer.

If I still had a lathe I would have turned the diameter of the brass down a bit, like from 1/2" to 3/8" and drilled a hole a bit tighter than 3/8". That would eliminate the need for a snap ring.

Something like this.

Very cool! I had plans of refretting a bass years ago but I changed plans and turned it into a fretless. Oddly enough, I was just thinking about that old bass. That rig is long gone, but my ‘74 P Bass could use frets sooner than later. Might need to take inspiration from you!

There's nothing stopping you, but you. Harbor freight has a decent jeweler hammer that I used for many guitars, but I wanted to step it up.
