Questions on 16” Rims / Tires / Tubes

Isn't there supposed to be a bumper in the bow notch that stabilizes the spare?
The body should touch the spare via the bumper.
You need the bumper to dampen the lateral moment on the mount.
Originally it was a block of wood, but later changed to a mushroom-shaped bolt.

yes, this is exactly the question i asked in my post. should i be incorporating something like this?

I'd be more concerned about how it does at low pressure.
testing for any leaks past the rivets right now to determine if a tube is needed. so far no issue with old, rusty, unpainted, unsealed rivets.

will be run at lower psi once the jeep is up and running.

The 'mushroom' spacer bolt is in the bow pocket:

The older style was a block of wood:
see this thread for the pics:

That's my copper-colored CJ-6.

Suspect what Doug is suggesting - at lower pressure, there is less sealing pressure between the tire and the rim.
Leaks may occur without the sealing assistance of the high pressure.

i'll be testing that too. but the real test will be lower pressure when the jeep is in motion, especially over rough terrain. i'm still a ways off from that. but i can always stuff a tube in there if there is any issue.

i like the idea of the "mushroom" bolt much better than the older fixed wood block. i'm guessing this mushroom bolt can be adjusted in or out via the threads? where can i find one? i need to look into this.

The bodies with the bolt have a threaded insert as part of the body.
I'm sure I have that bolt somewhere - it's like a carriage bolt head, but larger.
No square shoulder underneath.
McMaster-Carr might have something suitable.

Yes, adjustable.
Locking nut between the body and the bolt shaft.

I have a draw full of carriage bolts. but the picture that FinoCJ posts shows a head much larger than any carragie bolt I've seen.

I also wanted to see how it fit on the spare tire carrier. When mounted up, I slide a sheet of paper between the tire and the body. Close, but should be fine. I can also easily space the carrier out a bit if needed. FYI, the tire mounted on the axle is size 6.50-16, so a decent bit shorter and narrower, but with 235 85 16 all around, I don’t see there being any issues unless I’m really flexing the suspension off road, in which case the spare would come off anyway.

I know there was originally a small block of wood that held the spare off the body. Should I incorporate something like that here?
Use a 1" wheel spacer for the spare?

Iv got 235/85 on my fc. They are pretty bulged and its starting to crack the tread. Iv had them on it for 4 years but they are 11 yeras old.
