So I'm having issues with this Marson thread sert kit I inherited from my Dad. It appears to be pretty much new, which I would take to mean He also had problems. Specifically, I have a 3/8-16 Riv nut installed by a p/o which has failed. It is in a really Sh*t spot, blind hole etc... Getting to the point, the thing just breaks the insert long before it sets. I realize this is the largest insert the tool will do, but i have quite a number of smaller inserts i'd like to do and am not really confident in this P.O.S. Full disclosure I do have a lathe and mill, so the thread repair is not a huge hassle. But what are you using? T.I.A. Will

I am looking at the tool to expand the rivnut and it's not for tight spaces. How about one of those small cordless impact guns? Any one use that method?

I use rivnuts almost daily at work, and most are in tight spots. I turned some manual insert tools on the lathe that work great. Similar versions are available online. Dorman’s version:

I needed mine to reach deeper than this example, so I hollowed out a piece of round stock and welded a nut to the top, then used a grade 8 bolt through the center. Two wrenches squeeze the nut in place.

its not for tight spots, but I use the Harbor Freight one. Put in a bunch of the rivnuts when I redid the trans tunnel and firewall (so they can be removed for servicing) and they are holding up just fine. You can get extra mandrels for it on Amazon if you need different sizes.

Like that but I just use nuts and washers. Starting it with an impact tool helps a lot.

I do use one with great results. Just be careful not to over-torque the fastener and snap it off.

If you do make your own, it helps to file grooves in the face of the nut’s point of contact to help prevent it from spinning. This is one I have that’s commercially available.

I think I need to buy this tool now....

At work we use these:

At home I use a drilled out flanged nut with one wrench to hold it and a grade 8 bolt with a socket wrench similar to previously mentioned, I used one for my winch fairlead on my bumper. (I posted pictures somewhere on pulling the rivnut / nutzert)

Pem studs are also fun. They are less forgiving on the hole size and get pressed in.
