Ol Yeller

Since my flight is delayed....
First the props to Rozcoking23 for facilitating the relocation from SoCal up to Norcals place in Cottonwood, like 8-9 hrs apart ( Woodford Reserve packed for the Rubicon Rob, along with gas money)
Much thanks to Kyle storing it at his place and the use of his ( awesome) shop and tools. I was able to get there this past Tuesday on a rehab blitz.
OL Yeller ( which may have been a UP RR Jeep) had been sitting a number of years and got some love. It is strikingly solid and straight.
Lunch box lockers both ends, 4.27's a 3.15 Tcase set and 4:1 T18 along with front discs make for a formidable start.

In 3 days I was able to ( with occasional help from Kyle who whipped out a skid plate and performed some welding jobs)
All new u bolts ( bent up locally at Redding Trailer) and leaf springs center pins. 4 new shocks. All fluids changed ( looked pretty clean) Howell fuel Injection installed. New radiator and fan shroud ( pirated from Kyle's inventory dropped the original at a local shop but they are backed up) new water pump, hoses, belts. A heavy D44 cover ( also pirated from Kyle) pressure washed and mostly installed the soft top. It's pretty tight and hopefully will relax in the can with an entire bottle of Armor all on it.
6° caster shims up front, 4° shims in the rear and a coolant bottle added.

Went through the brakes but they are still a little weak. Best guess is a worn master ( did some flaps roulette to no avail) and the rf caliper won't bleed right.
Started right up and runs great on the TBI with the hei distributor. Idle a little fast probably related to map sensor either being faulty or too far away ( wonder who mounted that..) has no problem barking the tires.
There's still a list of things but they are not related to reliability.
Finally 4 new Milestar Patagonia MT from Discount tire in Redding.

Finally I can't thank Kyle enough for hosting Ol Yeller and me. First class accommodations, fine dining, lunch served and a constant stream of beer..maybe he wanted to make sure it got done and I left. Now he has a running driving Jeep at his disposal. He said he really likes it, except the color.

Kyle is a solid dude. Rich great you were able to make it to Kyles and get so much stuff done to your new to you jeep. Hope to see both of you in Colorado in August. Rich maybe you could meet Kyle in Calif. and help him get his jeep to Colorado.

Pump the brakes on that statement!
I cannot have every Rubicon Trip Dreamer showing up to fulfill their Jeep build dreams!!!

You were forced to sleep in a room inside a metal building with no exterior windows.
A really loud work start horn sounded at 5:58 and 6:00 AM every morning. Not to mention the dog that barks at 1AM when the raccoons raid the garbage dumpster.

Everything in the shop is covered in sawdust, it’s a solid 2 minute walk/ flight of stairs from the beer fridge…. and there are too many drawers to look through to find tools/shop supplies.

There’s always a risk of diarrhea, whether it’s the food I cook or the hangover.
You barely survived.

On a serious note…..
It was a great time despite the obstacles.
A furious 3 days of plowing through the necessities to get the jeep rubicon ready.
I was hoping to be able to help more during the day.
I’m really jealous of your Jeep!

I didn’t take many pics but here is what I have.
The initial tear down and inspection.

Added wings to the bolt that holds the spare tire carrier closed.

Cut a chunk of steel out of some boneyard mill equipment.
15 mins later we have a skid plate.

In addition to being a competent jeep mechanic, Rich really knows how to optimize the cooling capacity of a a refrigerator.
No complaints about his organizational skills!
