So I have ordered 2 aftermarket gas caps for my Jeep and neither of them will fit my fuel spout. The ones from Crown (CWA-J0908593) are too large for the opening. Does anyone have any recommendations on where to buy or an old stock one?

Last year I had to replace mine due loosing it after getting gas. Found an exact replacement from local Auto Zone.

I ordered that Crown part as the OP indicated and it wouldn’t fit my 71 gas tank either. I pulled the rubber seal out of it and replaced the cracked seal in my original gas cap, which worked for me.

I would do that if I had an original gas cap, when I bought this jeep it had flintstone floors and red rag hanging out of the filler neck. Pretty typical jeep rescue story....

Ok so doing some research, I think I know what is going on here. depending on when the jeep rolled off the line in Toledo in this year model it would have had two flavors of fuel cap, either vented or non-vented due to new environmental regulations that rolled out. The non vented model had a larger locking circumference and the vented had a smaller circumference.

All the '71s will have the rear mounted tank with the smaller cap.
If equipped with vapor recovery (California market, maybe others) they will use a sealed cap.
Lacking the vapor recovery system, the tank is vented through the cap.

There may also be a difference in fuel type - requiring non-leaded fuel or not.
If the locking diameter is the difference, the smaller diameter may be present to only admit the smaller diameter unleaded fuel fill nozzle.
Vauguely recall that these filler necks had a restrictor that admits only the unleaded nozzle.

Do you know which of these variants you have?
In TX you probably need the vented cap.

all I can say is that it has a smaller diameter fuel filler neck than what the aftermarket replacement cap will fit. Since I had nothing but a rag hanging out of the fuel filler neck when I got it, it has made this a silly little exercise.

I had a heck of a time replacing the cap on my 60 just to have the gasket darn near dissolve.

I recall someone has a reproduction filler neck for sale.
Barney's:
Expensive solution, but available.

Depending on your fab capability, you could also cut the flange from the filler neck and replace with a flange that fits an available cap.
Example:
Other places sell these too, like Tanks Inc.

I don't think all '71s are the same. FLAPS & Rockauto don't have complete data. I had this same trouble. )-:
A cap from a '77 Scout worked fine for me.

I’m always having to return parts not fitting my 70. My steering box is from a 65 truck. I’ve read before that Kaiser-Willy’s used whatever available parts on the 70 and 71s

Mmm.
I'd never say never with Jeep stuff.
However, seems more likely it's actually a '70 that was on the cusp of the transisition to rear tanks.
Or it has some reconstruction history that changed the tank location.
Does it have a build date sticker?

Purchased in 84. All original. Came in Yellow with black stripes, which was rare. It's since had the frame replaced (reverse shackle) and the body swapped (pre internet, had I only known what I had) in 90. Here is an internet photo of an orange one.
