Starting over on my CJ3B

Check this thread....I copied stuff from nickmil into although unfortunately seems nicks original thread is gone....

Basically you need this gear (along with the 2.46 D18 gears):

I think Doug is suggesting finding a used set of 2.46 D18 gears. I sold the complete set out of my CJ a number of years ago to someone for less than a $100. I remember Jeff Z couldn't give away a complete large case D18...used D18 gears are pretty common and cheap. But I seem to recall needing a 'bronco' gear of some sort to make it work in a centered D20 output. Someone is making those these days - maybe Tom's?
This exactly. Ths is my plan for my Commando with the D20. I'd love to have the lower Tera low gears but the extra .69 of a ratio isn't worth it to me. Used to be that Bronco gear was pretty much unobtanium but they are reproduced now. I think $100 ish.

I believe d300 is 2.62 reduction in original condition
Its still not really any cheaper as the adaptor to my Jeep T18 is $600 plus rebuilding the 40YO+ D300 would likely be necessary.

But you guys keep the ideas coming. So far the gear swap from a D18 to the D20 seems like a decent choice.

Do the D18 gears from my recently purchased parts Jeep (1970 CJ5 V6) match what your saying? 2.46

Have had family visiting the past several days so its been slow going.
The spring mounts are tacked on and the front shackle reversal is simply a bolt drilled thru the frame.

I'm traveling the next couple days so hopefully the axles can go under it this weekend.

Do you plan to mount the seats in front of the engine?
The engine definitely needs to move forward and the bumper back a couple inches.

I really have no clue what I’m doing so it will definitely need to be adjusted some more.

Looks good. As a suggestion, if you turn the front crossmember 90 degrees so it's flat, your steering shaft won't have to tunnel through it. Just my 2 cents.

Bought a 4.3 out of a 2003 S10 today. I’ll get it later this week so have engine mounts to replace either way.
You’re working fast! Did you buy just an engine, or a whole truck? I’ve been looking for a good 4.3 also. Are you needing to rebuild the engine, or is it good as is?

Hmmm, not really sure what’s being built here with engine so far back, as the crank pulley should be closer to the center line of the axle for a standard Jeep body without serious modifications to the firewall. Can’t wait to see the progress…

not sure there is such a thing my 4.3 has been trouble since it was in the blazer I took it out of, all new parts inside, crank pistons bearings etc. still a pos. its getting the axe in the spring when i can work in the shop without spending a fortune on heat. it will be free if you or anyone wants to come get it then.

Mine is a subject of the engine management system. It can run like a bat outta hell if the cards are right. I drove a 4.3 s10 and a 350 k30 in high school they were good.

The 3.5 in the flex had a few problems (bad throttle body) and the 3.5 in the 2019 expedition with 90k clatters on startup like the timing chain is bad. (Cam phasers again)

In-laws 5.4 just spent 4 months in the shop.
