Dana 27 Question?

Cold Warrior

'67 CJ5 Universal. Getting ready to mount Dana 27 axle to frame and I have a question about this appendage wielded to the axle housing (see photo). It's on the right side and it looks like it should be a place to mount a bumper stop, but I can't find a bumper stop with a square threaded post to attach to this. Additionally, none of the Dana 27 diagrams have this appendage. I'm left wondering. Who knows about this creature? Thanks!

Yep. You can see it here with the rubber bumper and the frame side pad on my old '69:

I think it's mostly there to keep the driveshaft from hitting the starter at full suspension compression.

Not sure what they changed, but, my 71 has never had either the snubber or the mount. I've never had an issue with clearance and I've flogged it offroad.

In 1971, they switched to these snubbers welded to the frame that hit the springs behind the axle. And on both sides, not just the passenger side:

I think intermediates had similar anti-torque bump stops to the '71s.

My 1966 with the v6 doesn’t have this “snubber” either.

They may have still been figuring the V6 Jeeps out in '66. My old '68 also had the snubber. Not sure about '67s.
