Avocado 71

Still waiting for the spring hangers to arrive. Really wanted to knock out the front suspension first. Parts have been on order for 5 weeks. They did send an email apologizing for the wait. Still lots to do so it hasn't impacted the project yet.

Steering mount is from Ididit. Mounted it to a plate and then mounted the plate to the floor with rivnuts. Will finish up the area when the transmission tunnel comes out later.
1971 - 119.jpg

There had been some internal modifications to the caddy column that were questionable. Bought a new column and steering wheel to be safe. Nice to not have the steering wheel in your chin. I fit in the Jeep perfectly but my son is 6' so a fender notch is in the future.
1971 - 123.jpg

Heater is fully installed. Wiring has been cleaned up. I left the bundle of red wires alone. Radio is now just a face plate as the heater vent ran right into it. Inside workings of the radio were like a watch. Hurt to cut that one up.
1971 - 126.jpg

Moved the Dana 30 over to the work area. YJ U bolt skid needed some modification to clear. Springs on. Tie rod flip bushings in. Fresh coat of paint.
1971 - 122.jpg

Started thinking about the radiator install. This is what is left of the grill. Stripped the lights out and squared up what was left of the shroud. Inside of the grill was greasy and had an old black rattle can paint job. Gave it a coat of oven cleaner to degrease. Got lucky and the oven cleaner was like a paint stripper to the black and left the green intact. Hit it with the pressure washer and it was like sandblasting.
1971 - 120.jpg

Of course one thing leads to another and I had to clean the black paint off everything. Going to weld up the extra holes and paint these green in the engine compartment.
1971 - 124.jpg

Patched the grill where that was cut out for the power steering. New mount will set the steering box lower.
1971 - 125.jpg

Half a can of oven cleaner and a roll of paper towels later we ended up here with the firewall. I like the patina green much better than the cruddy black. Hood will get the same treatment.
Going with the same Griffin crossflow radiator that Fireball swapped in to his CJ5. Going to have to be on my A game for this job. Ordered a pair of simple black valve covers as these had been overtightened one too many times.

This week was working toward radiator fabrication.

Vision for this Jeep is to keep its originality while unwinding some of the previous work and improving its off road capability. Something you would have seen on the trail back in the day.

The fenders had seen their share of use and modifications. Started with welding up the extra holes and hammering the fenders straight. Did not get carried away so they are still a little rough. Painted the fender wells, hood and inner fenders body color. Ran out of paint so the hood needs another coat. Left the exterior paint original.
1971 - 130.jpg1971 - 131.jpg1971 - 132.jpg

This is full rough in on the radiator. I went with stock GM pickup mounts that cradle the radiator with rubber bushings. Bottom mount is in a 3" channel that is welded to the bottom of the grill. Radiator is in solid with no movement. Lots of small modifications around the area to get all the clearances so the radiator didn't rub on anything. Headlight buckets were trimmed, Radiator shifted more to the passenger side to clear the power steering hoses. Check and double check constantly.
1971 - 133.jpg

Added a flange on the top of grill to gain mounting area for the radiator mounts. Finished welding the mounts and hold downs. Luckily nothing moved and the clearances remained the same. Unsure if I need to fill the gap between what's left of the shroud and the radiator.
1971 - 134.jpg

All of this was just the warmup for fabricating the radiator shroud. Shout out to Fireball for the great write up of his radiator install. It has been a valuable resource in helping me figure this out. Did the cardboard mock up of the shroud. I have the measurements on the metal all laid out. Will wait until tomorrow to start that phase.

Clock is ticking to be have this ready for the Rubicon.

Most of the week was working on the radiator shroud an buttoning up this segment. Final fit before last welding and grinding. The lower mount placement could have been better and I could have tighten the clearance on the side shroud addition. Just glad it turned out close to the ideal.
1971 - 136.jpg

Final install, Installation was tight. Passenger headlight connector needed to be customized. Need a trip to the beach to see if it all works.
1971 - 137.jpg

Radiator hose is for a 70 Buick GS. Cut in two and the manifold side turned around to miss the HEI distributor. Piece of stainless tubing to join the hoses.
1971 - 138.jpg

Painted the front of the radiator black. Paint for the grill patch blended in well. Painted the front crossmember. Not much left to move forward on here until the spring mounts arrive.
1971 - 139.jpg

Dropped the transfer case out for it's rebuild and twin stick conversion. T Case only had two bolts holding it on. That should account for the big oil leak it had.
1971 - 140.jpg

Could not find an old Dana 18 transfer case locally for the twin shifters so I paid up for the kit. Didn't expect it to be mostly NOS in cosmoline. One shift rail had a 1953 date and then a 1957 date when it move to Sioux City.

Very nice job on the shroud!

Thanks, I was worried that I didn't have enough talent to pull off the shroud fabrication. The cardboard template idea you had saved the day.

Suspension parts arrive on Monday. Finally had the manufacturer send what they had and sourced the missing items elsewhere. I tried waiting it out but already had 4 weeks of they are making them on Friday.

Knocked out some busy work with cleanup around the transmission area, filled the holes in the transmission cover and changed the oil pressure gauge line from plastic to copper.

As I was stalled waiting for suspension parts I jumped ahead and bought in metal for the rock sliders. 1971 - 144.jpg

Passenger side mostly welded up. 2x3, 3/16 rectangle and 1 1/2, 3/16 square tubing. A little on the heavy side but they will be taking some hits. Bought the tubes pre-bent from Trail Tubes. Not cheap but less expensive than what the local muffler shop quoted.
1971 - 146.jpg

Worked myself into a pickle and couldn't get a accurate measurement for this outrigger. Made a piece of structural carboard as a template.
1971 - 145.jpg

Kept the rocker to just inside of the width of the tire. Sticking out about 3 inches off the body.
1971 - 147.jpg

Finished until we get a sunny day to paint. Went for a balance of protection while keeping them unobtrusive. Anxious to get back on suspension.

Got a break in the weather so it was time to catch up on painting.
1971 - 150.jpg

Shop had a quick turn around on the transfer case. Added a twin stick and Novak tail housing. Appreciate that I can bring them all the parts and clean housing and they only charge labor.
1971 - 148.jpg

Transfer case is in. Twin stick addition lead to a bunch of slight modifications to make it all work. Working on shifter boots next. Nice to have parts going together for the last time.
1971 - 151.jpg

Rock rails are painted. They disappeared into the Jeep
1971 - 149.jpg

Received some of the suspension hangers. What didn't arrive I was able to fabricate. It is all tacked together. Will work on finishing the suspension next week.

What seats are those? Do you like them? I have black low-buckets in my Jeep (Smittybuilt or similar?) but have been really considering making the switch to a spice colored seat.

Seats are Bestop mounted on stock brackets. They are very comfortable for me and I sit well in the Jeep. . Like that they have some grip to the material and you don't slide around.

Making headway again. Shock mounts are in. These are a copy of Norcal's design. Simple and strong. Still need to make the final welds on the spring hangers. Steering linkage is complete, New calipers. New rotors will be installed when the new axle shafts go in.
1971 - 154.jpg

Brake and fuel lines are plumbed. Power steering supply line is in. New brake lines will arrive next week. Next up is installing the power steering cooler and adding fluids.
1971 - 155.jpg

Added a hood catch. Had a scare with the hood once already. Catch is from a later CJ7 that was cut to fit. Everything around the radiator just fits, no extra room.
1971 - 153.jpg

Big week of assembly. Start the morning with a plan and then head a different direction. Lots of bracket fabrication, find the right bolt fuss with details. Filled the Jeep with fluids and it started right up. Here's a mini flex test with the jack. Passenger side was on the bump stop, the drivers side was still drooping out. Can't wait to do some real testing.
1971 - 158.jpg

Adams drive shafts did another 3 day turn around. Rear one is installed.
1971 - 159.jpg

Engine bay is sorted out. It was worth the effort to be rid of all the plastic loom that ran randomly through the compartment.
1971 - 160.jpg

Finished the suspension welding, Fitted the drivers fender, installed the steering brace and winch. Drove it around the block. So far so good.
1971 - 156.jpg

Sending it into the local shop for the exhaust system and both lockers. Hoping for a quick turn around.
After that we are down to a short list for the Rubicon.

Transfer case skid plate
HD tie rods
11" rear brakes
Emergency brake
Wire the headlights, front turn signals and horn.

Then put a bunch of miles on it to work out any bugs. Glad that this was a running driving Jeep prior to the upgrades.

Where did you get the angled shackles on front?

Yes they are all the same same. Old Man Emu CS036R YJ springs. Used Norcal69's suspension build as a guide.
