Made a trip out of town and bought this Jeep. Owner and his son bought it a year ago with the intent to fix it up. The son bought a Gladiator and he was given his fathers 65 El Camino. That made this surplus in for them. Here are some Jeep archelogy pics.

Old Warn 8274, Body is in great shape, just surface rust. Someone did get rough with the bed floor. Thinking the bolts under the Jeep emblem were for a club plate. New age lights are coming off. Roll bar has good welds and well fitted to the Jeep.

Was built as a Jeepers Jeep with some history on the dashboard. 1971 - 20.jpg

Buick V8 was installed around 12,000 miles ago, T18 Transmission with reverse to the right and up. 4:88 gears, rear posi, Power steering. Clean install for the most part. Could use some new hoses and belts. All useable condition for now.
1971 - 22.jpg

Flanged 44 as it should be. Well made gas tank skid, U bolt skids with dual shock mounts, 10 leaf spring packs. Tires are worn evenly and lots of tread. They are date coded 2002 though.
1971 - 8.jpg

Stock Dana 27, Cross over steering, Rancho Shocks. Jeep Saginaw steering box. Heavy Duty radiator crossmember. Box is way forward and has a welded pitman arm. That is going on the list for a remodel.
1971 - 23.jpg

It is marking its territory. Lots of sealing in its future.

Dealer installed tire rack. been modified to move the tire higher. Every time you get fuel you have to open the rack. Roll bar padding with the era correct electrical tape. Jeep came with a useable Bestop. Pulled a sticker off the rear quarter and it brought the paint with it. Darn, 32x11.50x15 BFG KM1 Mud terrains. 10" wide aluminum wheels.
1971 - 2.jpg

The tail pipes are rotted out. The rest is in Ok shape.
1971 - 1.jpg

Seat padding is worn out. they look good with no tears. Old school dome light on a cord. Looks like an original 4 speed transmission cover. Everything works on the Jeep.
The steering column is a Cadillac tilt-tele. This is all the way up. Needless to say it is a bit awkward. That goes on the fix list. The wiring is covered in plastic loom and it goes everywhere.
1971 - 15.jpg

Original rear Jeep seat.
1971 - 13.jpg

Warn overdrive. A lockable glove box.
1971 - 12.jpg

Cutless hubs. First time for me to see a set in person.
1971 - 6.jpg

Hat channels are solid.
1971 - 5.jpg

Plan for this Jeep is to keep it mostly the way it is. Fix what is funky, Upgrade where needed. Use up some of the parts I have laying around from the white Jeep project. Stretch goal would be to have it capable to do the CJ5 Rubicon run next year and have my son drive it. It's a nice old great running Jeep, no use in messing it up.

And it starts. Went after some simple fix it items today.

Took off the high lift jack, Moved the backup lights out of harms way. Straightened the license plate. Removed some useless bolts. Took off and threw away the wheel locks.
1971 - 16.jpg

Removed the Auxbeam lights and installed a set of old KC's. Removed the tow bar mounts and tow hooks. The bumper is a newer CJ replacement bumper so I didn't feel bad about chopping it down. Ordered weld on shackle mounts for a tow point.

I love avocado green in these old jeeps. Looks like a nice older build for the most part too.
On a side note, small world. I grew up across the river from you in Rio Dell.

Nice looking Jeep! I had one that color.

Any idea what the seats came from? The plastic seat backs look to be the same as the set in my Jeep. I pulled them from the engine donor Jeepster Commando, however, I didn’t think they were original to that vehicle.

Torque of the V8 is fantastic. Put in any gear and it takes off. Makes you lazy quick as you can just chug along.
Rio Dell is a short hop. Big lumber mill is still going strong.
Seats are unique, No idea what they came out of. Wide headrest are fixed and they are narrow. Fit the Jeep pretty well. Padding is shot on the drivers side bottom.

Same frames too (different leather/vinyl). I thought the head rests were fixed too, but I gave a good pull and they came up. There is one center bar of a post for the headrests. The lumbar needed to be tightened up, so I pulled the plastic seat back and stuffed a bath towel between the wire bands and the seat foam. Much better now.

I love the 302 in mine.... and it doesnt get too bad a mileage either.... a full 15 gallon tank takes me about 2 to 2 1/2 weeks putzing around town (about 12-15 mpg, ~ish) which is compatible with the other vehicles I have. I am at a bit higher rpm even with the OD, probably 2000-2500 or so, as its got the 5.38 gears in it. Instant power and torque is right though... stab the "go pedal", and it DOES.... Yours is a GREAT lookin green, and the seats look to be pretty comfy as well.

Just about any Jeep V8 mpg is still better than the 345 V8 in the 1210. It'll pull a house while getting 10 mpg, and cruise at 65 to work while getting 10 mpg.
